RULES, or whatever
1. Despite the general concept, I think the pairings this can apply to are pretty widespread. Friendship is an important component of romantic love, after all! I guess the bottom line is to focus the fic more on buddydom than makeouts & such? (Basically: this is your spinster aunt's comment ficathon. I'm

"Doctor, I am not entering into a slap bet with you on this."
The Doctor visibly wilted at this. "Oh come on! Why not? I've never gotten to do one before, and I hear it's great fun for the whole family!" He chanced an appealing glance at Amy, who grinned and backed away, shaking her head and heading for the stairs.
"Hey, I've seen these things play out, and frankly I don't think either of you is equipped for the pain and disappointment of being on the receiving end of a slap bet-fueled slap. My cousins played that game once, and one of them ended up in the Emergency Room."
The Doctor worried a little at this, then brightened. "But Rory's a nurse!" He tugged at his lapels, lifting his chin. "And it's not like I'm afraid of him hitting me, anyway."
"Oi!"
"I'd rather keep my husband in one piece, if you don't mind... not that I think that you could do much damage to him anyway. I can guarantee he's gotten worse from the boys back home, but like I said, when a slap bet is in play, there's no telling what could happen. The power just gets to you, and..." Amy trailed off, remembering.
Sensing a weak point, and a little hurt at Amy's perhaps correct assessment of his physical strength, the Doctor couldn't resist. "I'll make you Slap Bet Commissioner?"
Gasping in surprised delight, Amy ran down to meet the pair again. "Ooh! I love it! What are my powers?"
Rory gave her a disbelieving look. "Seriously, have you gone mad?"
The Doctor ignored him, leaning around to answer Amy, "Here's how it goes: If a problem arises and we need a ruling, that's your job. But you have to be unbiased and put the integrity of slap bet above all else. This is an honor you will take with you to your grave. On your tombstone, it will read, "Amelia Pond: caring wife, loving friend, Slap Bet Commissioner."
Lifting his face upwards as if to ask the universe "Whyyyyyy?", Rory huffed, "Is no one remembering one important thing?"
When Amy and the Doctor ceased their excitement over slap bet procedure and looked at him, he raised his eyebrows. "Isn't it obvious? Why go into a bet with a Time Lord? It's not a fair match!"
Though the Doctor looked slightly offended, Amy nodded vigorously. "Yeah! Remember that time he bet me that B*Witched sang 'Because We Want To'? And when he found out that they didn't, he tried to go back to 1997 to make it true!"
Rory directed a smirk at the accused. "So you see, I am quite unmovable on this point. No slap bet, let's forget all about it." He rubbed his hands together. "Who's up for some tea?"
Of course, the Doctor hadn't given up without one last appeal: "But Rory! Rory the Roman! Surely you won't begrudge me the chance to engage in some manly bonding with you? I'm always hanging out with girls-"
"Who slap you for real reasons rather than for sport," interjected Amy, daring him to challenge her.
"Well, there's that," he conceded. "But won't it be fun? Monty Python does it with fish! We could do that?" He gave Rory his best puppy dog eyes.
Rory appeared to think it over for a moment, glancing at Amy, and thinking of the cot in their bedroom, and what lay in it. "Oh, all right... er, no fish needed. But these are my conditions: I decide the subject of the slap bet. I'm not betting against you on something you can change. Agreed?"
The Doctor was too pleased to be wary. "Yes! Pond?"
Amy shrugged. "Sounds fair to me. Right, then! One slap goes to the winner of the bet. Any premature slaps will be punished through the judgment of the Slap Bet Commissioner, with the potential for additional slaps to be awarded should this get messy. So! Get on with it. What's the bet?"
Rory paused shaking his right arm and loosening the muscles in order to give the Doctor an assessing glance. "I bet... that you have kissed our daughter."
He had just enough time to blush before a red handprint seemed to blossom on his face out of nowhere. As the Doctor clutched his cheek, he could dimly hear Amy laughing uncontrollably. He reflected belatedly that it had probably not been the best plan to take River out on a date on Father's Day and then try to tell Rory that the holiday was on a different day...

Date: 2011-06-27 11:24 am (UTC)“It is not ridiculous.”
“It’s ridiculous, spaceman. Look, you’re dripping all down my trousers now, look!”
“You said you wanted to do me a favour, Donna!”
“Favour, yes. Buy you a drink at the 'Star Wars Cantina', yes – ”
“ - I keep telling you that’s not real!”
“ – Go paintballing with you, yes; even get you Audrey flippin’ Hepburn’s phonenumber – ”
“She did have a thing for me, didn’t she?”
“Yeah, yeah she did – but not this!”
A brief pause. If she’s not mistaken, it’s definitely the sign of a sulk brewing on the Time Lord horizon. “’S alright for you.”
“I know.” She might be being just a little bit smug. Still, he deserves it.
“You have nice hair.”
Cue a flick of said hair. “Oh, I know.”
“Van Gough had that hair. Garfunkel had that hair. Good old Anne of GG had that hair. And I have – ”
“The hair of an idiot?”
Alright, so that’s a little unfair. A little.
He’s pouting as well. The big ol’ spaceman, Mister ooh-look-at-me-I’ve-got-an-overdressed-screwdriver – is pouting. “Come on Donna, it’s what friends do for each other!”
That’s true. Kind of true, anyway. Sort of true. And she’s done some pretty mad stuff – seen her boyfriend leave her for a giant spider lady, saved the world from little potato people, waved at little blobs of sentient fat – but she’d never expected to be sitting in a public bathroom in 2950, downtown California, helping a Time Lord who quite on a whim has decided to dye his hair.
It lasts for roughly two weeks, stains every surface it comes into contact with, spectacularly ruins his favourite shirt – ‘Cary Grant gave me that shirt!’ – when it runs during a sudden downpour, and her hands are bright red for a month.
Totally worth it though. She keeps the photos safe.

Date: 2011-06-22 01:33 am (UTC)"My La--Morgana. What are you doing here?"
"Guinevere," she says, solemn, to the point. "I left something behind. I'm here for that and nothing else. You can choose to cooperate or not. It's up to you."
It has been nearly a year and they are no longer the people they once were, no longer the girls who shared blankets and shook twigs out of each other's hair. It's not what it was and Gwen has reminds herself lest she start feeling again. She chose to stay and Morgana chose to go, to become an entirely different realm, a place Gwen can't touch and a person she doesn't know.
Gwen swallows hard. She knows she should call the guards, should say something and try and stop her. Morgana left her rights to everything here when she left this place and they both know this.
(And even so, a part of her is torn. No, all of her is torn. I left something behind, Morgana said. Gwen doesn't dare hope anymore.)
"Right," Gwen breathes, "be quick."
She tells herself it's because she doesn't want any unnecessary trouble. The knights are either with Arthur or on patrol at the borders and the irony isn't lost on her. At this rate, the guards would probably be the ones hurt. Without Merlin, Gaius would have too much on his hands.
Gwen accompanies her to the library and Morgana is quick, efficient, putting Goeffrey to sleep with a snap of her fingers.
It's a book, small and leather-bound. Once she finds it, she clutches it close to her chest and hisses words that Gwen does not understand. She pauses for just a moment and there's a look in her eyes, something hidden and reluctant but underneath that, forlorn. Gwen only sees it because she knows what it looks like, has known it all her life and chased it away with hushed words and warm arms.
"You know," says Morgana, "you can still--"
I miss you too but-- "No, I'm sorry," and then, "you know that you can come back. Arthur would--"
"I can't," she says, cold, flat. Don't you ever want to, Gwen wants to ask. Much of the time, I want you to. All of the time, really.
As if she's read her mind, Morgana smiles. It's a changed smile, lacking the warmth and familiarity Gwen had curled up into once. Still, there is some sincerity in there, buried deep somewhere. "But thank you all the same," she whispers, just before vanishing in a whirlwind, "you know I--we always--"
"I know, Morgana. I know. Just hurry up and go."
She's sure this probably counts as treason, aiding and abetting the enemy in her escape. Gwen shakes her head and tries to fight off the smile.

Date: 2011-06-22 12:59 pm (UTC)++++++
It’s not fair, Martha thinks as the doctor starts twirling around the Tardis console mumbling to himself about where they should go next. He can’t just tease her like this.
Well, in a manner of speaking he’s been teasing her in many ways since that first encounter but this-wait till you read book seven. Oh, I cried...- this is a different kind of teasing. You’d think that with all the madness that comes with travelling with the doctor, the last thing on her mind would be how Harry Potter’s tale ends.
But the thing is; it is very much on her mind. It’s all good when they’re running for their lives or when she’s trying to digest the fact that they are travelling through time, through space in ways that shouldn’t even be possible but when she gets a chance to stop and catch her breath, when the Doctor asks her where she would like to go next like he’s asking her right now, she can’t help but think of the same moment every single time.
“You’ve read the last Harry Potter book, yeah?” she asks him, stepping up to the console.
“What? Yes, but what does that have to do with anything? Go. Where do you want to go Martha? 1945?”
“Why would I want to go to 1945?” Martha asks, momentarily distracted.
The Doctor shrugs. “Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?”
“How about somewhere in the future?”
He stops and looks over at her, frowning in that adorable way of his. “Alright then,” he says turning back to the buttons and levers. “How far into the future? Ten-fifteen years? How about the day the moon explodes? Right crazy day, that.”
“Actually doctor, I was wondering if you could take me to the last Harry Potter book release.”
The doctor peers over the console at her. “What?” he asks, thoroughly disappointed at the lack of adventure in her request.
Martha just smiles and gives a little half shrug, “It’s just...I can’t stop thinking about it ever since you mentioned the last book-”
“Martha,” he says very seriously, walking over and gripping both of her shoulders. “You can travel anywhere in time and space and you want to go buy a book?”
“It’s Harry Potter!” she says and the Doctor blinks at her for a moment before his face cracks into a huge grin.
“Yeah,” he says, dragging the word out, “All right, then.” He turns around and punches in the appropriate coordinates. “July 21st, 2007-the last Harry Potter book release!”
The TARDIS buzzes to life as they take off and Martha has to grab on to the railing as it lurches sideways.
“Come on,” he says holding out a hand to her.
“Where are we going?” she asks, taking his hand as he starts leading her down the TARDIS hallways.
“Well, it’s the last book isn’t it? You can’t show up like that!” he waves a hand at her and she looks down at her simple jeans and shirt.”Where’s the fun without a bit of dressing up?”
“So what, you’re going to paint a lightening scar on your forehead?”
“Just watch,” he says pushing his way through a door.
She watches him flit around the vast room, sorting through racks and trunks of overflowing socks and shirts and boots. He bends down to dig through a chest of scarves and robes and calls out to her “Gryffindor or Hufflepuff?” he asks, nose still buried in the clothing
“I’m a Ravenclaw,”
“Oh yes you are,” he smiles at her, holding out a black robe encrusted with the blue and silver of Ravenclaw house.
In the end, she does help him paint a lightening scar on his forehead and watches him trade his spectacles for a rounder pair and shrug out of his overcoat in favour of Gryffindor robes.
“The look suits you,” she compliments as they link arms and step out of the TARDIS and join the queue of shouting, excited fans.
