Lavinia had watched Mary and Matthew together for a long time before she realised she was not jealous of Mary, indeed, she was jealous of Matthew. She hated the idea of hurting Mary in any way.
She had approached the girl that evening, the night she was asked to stay. She had spoken softly, shyly and cautiously, wincing when the girl began to cry.
“Mary?”
“It’s too late…”
“I… don’t understand?”
“He has already hurt me.”
