Years and years and years and years of lonely work, not getting to talk to anyone about what was going on in his head-- sometimes Dumbledore maybe, but it doesn't sound like they discussed Lily much after things got underway-- just missing her and trying so hard to make up for betraying her, for going over to the Death Eaters, for not managing to save her...
