I'm bored, let's get our comment ficathon on!

+ The basic concept of this one: for all those times when you expected canon to give you something awesome, and then it didn't, or it gave you the potential for something to be awesome, and then itkilled it off with Spanish Influenza didn't see it through all the way. Basically, this is a comment ficathon for those times when you felt like 'Wait! But! What about [really awesome thing]?' or 'Wait! But! I thought for sure [insert really awesome thing here] would happen! Weren't they leading up to [really awesome thing]?' or 'How can you cancel this when I'm sure that another season would bring us [really awesome thing]?' Or maybe even just those pensive times when you go 'Man, wouldn't this whole story have been much better if only [really awesome thing] would have happened at the get-go?' Or, hell, let's be real here: those times when your otp got punched in the face by the dread forces of canon. Let us thwart them all with the power of this ficathon!
Basically, this is really open-ended and subjective, with one common theme. And that common theme is, 'Canon haps, why you gotta make my soul feel like an Adele song?'

Date: 2012-02-21 08:39 am (UTC)She had arrived on his doorstep the day after the wedding carrying two bags that had been packed for a Mexican honeymoon. He opened the door, and if he was surprised to see her, he didn't show it. He took a look at her tearstained, red-eyed face, and instantly opened the door for her. He didn't ask what was wrong, though he knew from the invitation that had been sent what the previous day was supposed to be. She realized he had figured it out on his own, only mentioning once how "stupid" that "silly boy" was.
With her wardrobe so ready for the tropics, he told her she'd need a warm jacket and some shoes more substantial than her flip-flops. "Atrocious things, those," he'd said, mumbling something about uncouth Americans under his breath. He was unchanged. She had smiled then - her first smile since she'd been left at the altar. He took her shopping, and they didn't speak much as he drove her around town to each of the stores she needed to go to, and he paid for everything without a second glance. She thought that was very kind of him, very thoughtful, as if he knew how much she disliked being parted from her money.
On the second day she mostly stayed in the guest room and cried, the reality the life she had planned now being gone for good settling in as tightness in her shoulders. He came to her door almost every hour, asking if she'd like a sandwich or some tea, but he mostly left her alone with her tears, which was what she wanted. Crying all day sounded like a good idea to her, and she was somewhat pleased he seemed to agree.
Now it was the third day. She'd come out of her room for the big, proper English breakfast he had prepared, and she had eaten her first substantial meal since being jilted. He made polite small talk, asking how the store and everyone was, never mentioning his name, she noticed. She gave him brief, half answers, because the truth was too depressing. Instead she told him everything was fine, all was well, just as he left it. Thinking of home made her think of that day again - that day which was supposed to be the happiest of her life. She started to tear up once more, there among the toast and eggs and clotted cream. He reached across the table and rested his hand on hers, and she felt warm for the first time since her ruined wedding. He had suggested a walk after breakfast, and here they were.
He kept a slow, steady pace, and she looked at the architecture as they passed by. Then she stopped, suddenly burning with a question she had to ask him. He had continued a few paces when he realized she wasn't beside him, and turned around to look at her.
"Rupert, why weren't you at the wedding?"
He didn't answer straight away, looking down at his feet for a moment before he removed his glasses and polished the lenses with a handkerchief, a gesture so familiar to her that she almost laughed.
"Well, my dear, maybe I just couldn't stand to see you marrying that foolish boy."
She was silent for a moment, the air between them thick with the understanding of the meaning behind his words. After a few deep breaths of crisp air, she looked down, nodded, then looked up at him with a smile.
"Shall we continue?" was all she said, starting to walk past him as if she knew he would follow. When he caught up with her, and she smiled again, the cold wind making her lips slightly chapped. Looking forwards, she reached her little gloved hand beside her and grabbed his hand where it was swinging at his side. His fingers instantly closed around hers.
They continued their walk.
