Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

"Damon, why do you have a massive bag of cracker jacks?"

"Becaaaaauuuse, Elena, we're visiting Duke."

"Duke?" she repeated, "How do you even kno - " she cut herself off, "Of course you'd know. You read my mail, didn't you?"

He ignored her accusation of mail fraud, "Stefan told me that our girlfriend ("I'm only his girlfriend, Damon") got into the prestigious university and there's a basketball game this weekend so... I planned this road trip for you. And me. Surprise."

Elena now noticed the immense overnight bag Damon had packed for her lying next to his Chevy. "What."

"You. Me. College debauchery. Drinking. Men painted blue. Sorority girls. Non supernatural hijinks."

"I repeat: What."

He frowned, putting down the oversized bag of cracker jacks carefully. "You need to visit the college, I need to visit Vanessa the hottie supernatural expert. Stefan needs to brood in the dark about the declining population of bunnies in the Virginia woods. Hence: road trip."

She seemed to take this information in, and she nodded her head slowly. "Did Stefan put you up to this?" she asked.

"No."

"...really?"

"Elena, just get in the car."

"Damon." She tilted her head to the side as she was want to do when she was asking for the truth. He sighed and it seemed like she was getting to the truth.

And then she was somewhere - sitting in the passenger seat of his car, buckled in and door locked while he threw the bags into the trunk. "DAMON."

The aforementioned vampire smirked as he got into the driver's seat. "And... we're off," he said casually as the car lurched from 0 to 60 mph.

"Cracker jacks?" she asked, somewhere in the northern part of North Carolina. "Did they run out of real food?"

He huffed, offended. "Cracker jacks are a road trip staple, Elena."

She sent him a flat look. "Cracker jacks are awful."

"Cracker jacks are timeless."

"Yeah, because they already taste stale." She shifted in her seat, turning off the radio station that played a seemingly perpetual loop of Ella Fitzgerald. "You can't taste the difference between fresh jacks and six year old jacks."

"There's a prize at the bottom of every box."

"But who wants to dig around the awful stuff to get to the prize?" she asked.

"Um, everyone."

"How do I know it's worth it?" she asked softly. His eyes flicked to meet hers from the road before tightening his grip on the steering wheel.

"Sometimes you just have to trust that it is."

"I hate basketball," she declared during the first ten minutes. Their seats were in the first row, center.

Damon rolled his eyes. "That would have been a useful fact to know before I bought the tickets, Elena."

She shrugged. "I didn't really know. I gave it a chance and now I know I hate it. It's a stupid sport." The man next to her dressed in Duke blue glared. She ignored him, sipping Damon's second beer. Half of it was already gone. "Seriously - what is the point? Ball in hoop. I could do that."

"I sincerely doubt that. And that is not the point."

She laughed. "Oh, okay. Then what is?"

"To win."

She pursed her lips.

"DAMON. THIS IS KIDNAPPING. DAMON. I'M NOT GOING. I'M CALLING STEFAN. DAMON." She struggled to escape his iron-clad grip on her waist, leading her into the house. A few boys in collared shirts and madras shorts looked over curiously at the spectacle.

"Relax, Elena," Damon muttered tiredly, waving off the few frat boys who looked like they were going to wander over to the pretty girl. "It's a frat house, not a gas chamber." He smirked. "What happened to being more fun?"

So... Elena can safely say that she missed this.

This drinking cheap beer in a house with a bunch of people united by the same win. People who weren't vampires or werewolves or mummies or the Loch Ness monster. People who didn't want her dead. Boys who only wanted one thing - and that one thing wasn't her blood.

Normal. This was normal.

After her third round of beer pong, Elena wandered to the wraparound porch. The sky was a deep blue, making the stars seem like holes in the cosmos. For the first time in almost two years, Elena felt like she was one with the universe - not fighting against it.

She grinned as she felt the rush of air behind her that indicated a vampire blur. "Haven't seen you in a while," she commented.

"You seemed pretty busy with your boys," he replied.

She laughed as she turned to face him. "I haven't been to a party in forever. I forgot how much I missed it." He smiled, pleased with himself. "Shouldn't you be meeting Vanessa now?"

He chuckled. "And leave you alone at a frat party? Nope," he popped the p, "You might get roofied."

"Roofied? Honestly?"

"Vervain doesn't work against roofies."

She rolled her eyes. "I'm sure my big, bad vampire protector will be able to hear me screaming from three miles away." She tilted her head again. "Why aren't you meeting her? Really."

"I'm really just staying here with your charming self, Miss Gilbert."

She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. "I'm in danger, aren't I? There's something happening in Mystic Falls and Stefan told you to get me out for the weekend." She let her shoulders droop with exhaustion at the incoming threats. "What's after me now?" she asked tiredly.

He leveled her with a look. "Nothing. Your life is, surprisingly, not in danger."

"Then why are we here?"

He sighed. "You just... you looked like you needed a weekend away from all that 'werewolves and witches and bitches, oh my' to be just... a senior in high school." He smiled, that genuine smile that always made feel like smiling back. "A senior who got accepted into a great university, might I add." A shrug was added. "Another five minute time out was well-deserved."

There was something so... honest about this sheepish Damon. Elena liked it. "Thank you," she said. "You're a good friend."

He smiled again. "You're welcome... friend."

"DAMON," she called from inside the hotel bathroom.

"WHAT?"

"Do you even know how to pack?"

"Is there a problem?"

"You just dumped out my entire underwear drawer into this bag. I have no shirts. Or jeans. All I have are underwear, my diary, Mr. Teddy, and three pairs of boots."

She could practically feel his apathetic shrug. "Wear mine."

"DAMON.”

“What?”

“Twizzlers are a road trip staple. And Coke.”

“…good night, Elena.”

“And some chocolate wouldn’t hurt.”

I honestly thought that while packing he went, 'what do I want Elena to wear?' decided on lingerie and sexy boots, and borrowing his clothes was a plan B.
