Title: There's a somebody I'm longing to see
Pairing: DeWitt/Dominic
Rating: G
Word Count: 760
Summary: Mr. Dominic performs a chivalrous rescue; Adelle is suitably grateful.
Author's Note: This is pretty much just ... fluff. Huzzah for shameless fangirlitude! And D/D Celebration Fortnight. Which, the two pretty much go hand in hand. ♥

Adelle can’t stand Clive Ambrose. What’s more, she’s quite certain his regard for her is about as high as hers for him. The difference between them is that he seems to derive some troublesome and very annoying delight from it.

It’s true that within the realm of the Rossum Corporation, it’s largely a man’s world, but she’s far from the only woman here. And yet the second the band begins to play, he is standing by her, requesting a dance. She casts a glance Mr. Dominic’s way: he’s in conversation with the security head of the D.C. House. No hope of rescue there, then. She finishes off her glass of champagne, puts on a smile, and allows the insufferable man to lead her out onto the dance floor.

He’s an adequate dancer, which she finds disappointing. Had he stepped all over her toes, at least she’d have derived some material for later complaint out of the experience. As it is, it’s nothing besides tiresome. She doesn’t much care for these functions, but all of the Dollhouse higher-ups are inevitably both very rich and very important, and, as such, like to be reminded of that with these tedious charades. It is a lovely party, exquisite ballroom and formal dress and all: there’s even an ice sculpture shaped like a swan. (“And what is that,” she’d dryly observed earlier in a murmur to Mr. Dominic, “if not the true mark of a prestigious social gathering?” He’d considered it awhile, very straightfaced, before muttering back, “I think it looks more like a duck,” and she’d had to bury her laugh in her hand as their colleagues came up to greet them.)

Still, she is not fond of being on display like this, of the smug and polished falseness of everyone around her. Perhaps it isn’t so very different from what she does at the House on a daily basis, but at least that (she reasons, a little absurdly) is hers. She is proud of the work she does, the small world she commands, and doesn’t much enjoy the reminder that there are others out there who do what she does. She can’t quite believe that her associates share her approach at their own Houses.

Ambrose keeps up a steady stream of chatter, beginning with “You’re looking lovely this evening” and, in no time at all, making his way to how “admirable it is that you’ve recovered so well from that nasty business a few months ago; rest assured, no one here at Rossum attributes the incident to you. It was quite out of your control.” She has no trouble offering quick, pleasant replies in return, and all the while secretly thinks it’s rather a shame that Alpha’s composite event hadn’t taken place in this ballroom.

They are perhaps halfway into a very nice rendition of Someone To Watch Over Me when Mr. Dominic appears beside them, turning the song title suddenly and blessedly relevant to Adelle’s current state of existence. “May I?”

“What, you don’t see enough of her at work?” Ambrose asks, chuckling. Mr. Dominic responds with a small, obviously forced smile. The awkwardness left in the wake of the failed witticism clearly heightens Ambrose’s motivation to get away quickly; Mr. Dominic’s intention, she suspects. “A pleasure as always, Adelle.”

“Indeed, Mr. Ambrose.” She breaks away from him and slips one of her hands into Mr. Dominic’s. She curves the other around his shoulder, leaning in a little closer as she does it to mutter, “Thank you.”

“You looked less than thrilled,” he replies, smirking, his voice low. He rests his free hand lightly on her waist. “Thought I’d cut in.”

She feels a smile tug at her mouth. “Oh dear, am I that transparent.”

“Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone else picked up on the signs.”

“Well, in that case, thank God for your expertise.”

“Just doing my job, ma’am.”

“Of course, Mr. Dominic.”

They aren’t quite cheek to cheek, but these old songs seem to demand romance and so she leans into him in a way she knows she’d refrain from otherwise. She considers the glittering world around them from over his shoulder. It seems infinitely more bearable at the present moment. She’s had just enough champagne that she doesn’t quite check the impulse to enjoy the familiar smell of him, the comfortable newness of being this close. The singer finishes Someone To Watch Over Me and launches, melancholy, into Stormy Weather.

This was wonderful. So beautifully in character, and so real. Nothing will ever convince me that this little moment didn't happen.

He’s an adequate dancer, which she finds disappointing. Had he stepped all over her toes, at least she’d have derived some material for later complaint out of the experience. As it is, it’s nothing besides tiresome

I don't know what it is about these three sentences that make them so, but it's like you actually managed to tap into DeWitt's mind here. It's her voice expressing them to me, via the helpful medium of a computer screen, but then that's true of every sentence in this.

As for the actual dancing, well you've just created yet another happy place for me to escape to. And it's a glorious one, She’s had just enough champagne that she doesn’t quite check the impulse to enjoy the familiar smell of him, the comfortable newness of being this close.. DAMMIT SHIP AND YOUR LACK OF PERSONAL SPACE AT THE BEST OF TIMES.

It was sweet, and beautiful, and oh the lovely summation of their change in relationship, post Spy In The House Of Love, with two simple song titles.

Aw, thank you so much! ♥ oh the lovely summation of their change in relationship, post Spy In The House Of Love, with two simple song titles. I am glad you liked that! I was like, 'Oh, Lord, this is so shamelessly anvillicious,' but I couldn't quite resist! "Stormy Weather" came onto my iTunes recently and it just so reminded me of, like, poor post-1x09 Adelle sitting in her office in the dark drowning her sorrows. There is just something about Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky / Stormy weather since my man and I ain't together that got me all D/D flaily, but in the angstiest and most soul-tormented of ways.

I'm pretty sure your destiny is to write these two for the rest of eternity.

Because YES.

I AM IN ENTHUSIASTIC FAVOR OF THIS DESTINY, IT SOUNDS VERY PLEASANT.

Thanks always, bud!

What made this so beautifully in character is you didn't go overboard - they just danced, and that was that. But it was enough because the readers can read between the lines and knows they TOTALLY WANT TO JUMP EACH OTHER RIGHT NOW LIKE RABBITS DOING EET! ;)

Yep, this is another bit that's going into my canon. I'm amassing a lot of that lately from wonderful fanfic.

OH, THE RESTRAINT THAT IT TOOK. I so wanted to be like, AND THEN ANGELS SANG, AND THEY WERE SHROUDED IN GOLDEN LIGHT, AND ALL THE GUESTS STARTED SWOONING & FAINTING & APPLAUDING, AND AND AND. But somehow, barely, I refrained!

Winner of perfect last line? YOU, MY DEAR. YOU. Wonderful moment between them. I like how it's just another between them in which they're perfectly in sync. Also, you know Ambrose backed off because he saw the "I'm gonna kill you stare if you don't move away now" in Dom's eyes.

OH MAN YOU KNOW IT. :D :D :D (What is it about these two that renders the threat of violence so adorable? Technically, it should not be possible.)

Yay! I'm loving the excuses to sit here and imagine Adelle and Dominic all dressed up for a black tie event. Seriously, that's an uber sexy image right there!

RIGHT?! I think the reason I did not go into detail about their appearances is that my brain would have short-circuited. This way, everyone gets to just imagine the pretty!

Thank you for reading, milady. :D

“Of course, Mr. Dominic.”

You write from Adelle's perspective so beautifully. Everything you make her say/think is witty and perfect.

Clive Ambrose is such a creeper.

Oh...!

Nicely played, through and through. Just a sweet, charming little moment on the surface that shows how in sync they are, yet hints at so much more.
I love your Adelle POV so, so much. I think it's part of the reason I almost always write from Dom's...because to do Adelle means I think of how you write her, and then I get all askeered off.

Thank you so much, buddy! ♥ And oh, gosh. I love writing Adelle, but Dom I always have a tricky time with. Your mad skillz, I envy them! And do not even get me started on Topher. Writing that silly work-marriage story was like PULLING TEETH FROM MY BRAIN. How do you do it?!

I love how you write Adelle. It's so spot on and just infinitely lovely.

The idea of Dominic and DeWitt in a formal, black tie affair and dancing just made me all smile-y and giggly. Hee.

Why couldn't we have had just epic time of them being snarky FOX? It would've been amazing. I love how you write them in this pre-Spy In The House Of Love era. It feels very in character but more intimate than we see too, it is a great balance.

all the while secretly thinks it’s rather a shame that Alpha’s composite event hadn’t taken place in this ballroom
Latent evil tendencies of win!

Mr. Dominic responds with a small, obviously forced smile. The awkwardness left in the wake of the failed witticism clearly heightens Ambrose’s motivation to get away quickly; Mr. Dominic’s intention, she suspects.
I could literally picture this whole exchange.

Their end exchange is again this perfect blend you write for them of just amazingness.

She’s had just enough champagne that she doesn’t quite check the impulse to enjoy the familiar smell of him, the comfortable newness of being this close.
I love the comparison of his familiar smell and the newness and how both things are comfortable and good.

And your last sentence, you had to bring the angst didn't ya?

Also: I have a weak spot for Someone To Watch Over Me so I have so much love for you that you used that song.

Thank you so much, buddy! ♥ Haha, "Someone to Watch Over Me" felt so shameless, but I could not resist! So I just had Adelle herself think how fitting it was, thereby avoiding absolute shamelessness! BAM.

IMAGINE THE SNARK. I still think we need a spinoff prequel, and that way it could star Amy Acker and Alan Tudyuk and Enver doll-wise and be AMAZING, but, quite frankly, really just be The Adventures of Adelle HBIC DeWitt & Laurence Dominic, The Spy Who Loved Her, And Suits. With many appearances by Judith.

Mr Ambrose is officially a Slimy Bastard and this is officially a Lovely Ficlet! I love little D/D moments like this - where nothing much is really going on, but somehow, it's enough for these two - they seem to be enjoying each other the most when they share their little jokes and balance at the edge of professional and intimate.
And you made them DANCE.
Awesome, I enjoyed this!

Ahh, the image of them dancing in their formal wear is making my soul so happy! And I love how wonderful they are, with their bantering and mutual disdain for everyone else and how he's just got her back. It's so perfect!

Also, as a side note, I love how awesomely creepy Ambrose is. Like, while it is sad and creepy that he's stolen all these bodies to live in, I'm sure Adelle will at least find it satisfying that she can have him killed repeatedly.
