I loved your parallel with Romeo & Juliet! When I watched the killing scene (the 2nd time, that is - the 1st time I was totally lost), I had a very strong association with: "...Oh happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rest and let me die". These words came to me all of a sudden, and I thought it was just my twisted mind making a connection. Except... in a way, Romeo & Juliet belong to feuding families, their marriage is forbidden by a convention, and the happily ever after is impossible for them without each other. Guy and Marian are fighting on different sides and their happily ever after is an impossibility (the legend happens to be in the way as well). However, in the view of their emotional journey throughout the 2nd series, I felt that the happily ever after with Robin was not really possible for Marian either. Let's face it - the tragic end is a lot more dignified and appropriate than her galopping away with Robin and never giving Guy a second thought. It does not make it less painful of course...
