Don't let season one dissuade you too much. I watched season two first, and then went back and saw bits and pieces of s1 afterwards, and I didn't think it was anything particularly spectacular. It's a lot bleaker than the second season, and Michael isn't really Michael yet -- his characterization doesn't quite settle until season two.
But, dude, keep watching until s2. Or just skip ahead to s2. Because s2 . . . is one of the most glorious seasons of anything I've ever seen. Perhaps the most glorious. It is consistently amazing and heartbreaking and hilarious.
