The subtext is rapidly becoming text!
Jul. 18th, 2012 07:56 pmLately, my brain has been so tickled by the existence of these powerhouse slash ships, and the rabid energy and devotion of their shippers, and what a zany time it is for fandom because canon and fandom have this new means of interacting that they never really have before. So I have reached the point where I optimistically but determinedly believe that, hey, one of these ships has to go canon sometime! Someone's going to break down that barrier, and also break Tumblr from excess squeeing. In my heart of hearts, I know this to be true.
So, you tell me! Which of these beloved ships strikes you as the most likely to get its canon on? And which would you most like to see? Expound in comments if you feel like it! And by jove, bring gifs & other highly scientific forms of evidence.
[Poll #1854718]
(I get that Don't Trust The B is a way tiny fandom compared to the others, but I can't help it. Have you watched Don't Trust The B? I also get that John/Sherlock will never, never, never happen -- thank you, interviews with Moffat and actors! -- but it felt so wrong not to include it.)
My fandom darling otp that went canon over a decade ago thanks you for your time. ♥

(Also: this post's entire existence might be a big joke. But I don't know, man! I believe in the terrifying & magnificent powers of SHIPPERS.)

Date: 2012-07-19 03:01 am (UTC)Actually I think there are a lot of people who'll say it might be Derek/Stiles from Teen Wolf, given how the wind seeeeeems to be blowing in that direction, but I'm not convinced yet, myself. It would take a lot of character development to get them to that point, anyway, and who knows what will happen between now and then (or how many people in high places will decide that viewers would rather see Tyler Hoechlin mackin' on a lady or whatever.)
ETA: Obvs if I got to decide it would be Arthur/Merlin all the way! But alas, I am not a writer for Merlin.

Date: 2012-07-19 03:05 am (UTC)For what it's worth, my roommate got me to ship Dean/Cas despite the fact that I've watched, like, one and a half episodes of SPN and have no especial interest in watching more. I sort of ship John/Sherlock, but in a romantic friendship/platonic sort of way. Ignoring Moffat as far as that goes. :P

Date: 2012-07-19 03:07 am (UTC)I really really really ship Merlin/Arthur like burning. It will never be canon, but the subtext will always be there and imo intentional (as well as with John and Sherlock). The stolen glances, 'two sides of the same coin', oh be still my beating heart.
Need I say more?

Date: 2012-07-19 05:06 am (UTC)if we're talking network and showrunner and cast friendliness towards the matter, i would say derek/stiles because jeff davis and the show so far have done ACES better with gender and sexuality than most shows i've seen in ages, and that goes beyond having a canon non-stereotypically gay character and ladies who tell the gender roles to fuck off. also this post (http://saucefactory.tumblr.com/post/27199655857/fanon-to-canon-a-journey) gives me this teeny tiny glimmer of cautious optimism but cautious being the key word. my only hesitation is that the show would probably have to run for like at least five more seasons for it to be a believable development because while there's tons of tension and wonderful character-foily dynamic there, the characters at the moment aren't big fans of each other and one of them is kind of an emotionally stunted dude with major trust and anger issues :( i mean, i would happily take them being canon but i would hate for them to butcher the characters in the process if they rushed it to please the fans.
semi- or unrelatedly! (if you haven't already been exposed to my tumblr spam about the topic) -- you should totally check out political animals. it has killer awesome knock-your-socks-off leading ladies who share a gloooorious dynamic and a gay character who is front and centre and whose sexuality is not made to be a gigantic issue at all (even though pretty much everything else about his life is, the poor kid). also, it is so unabashedly feminist on the whole that i want to cry from joy a little bit

Date: 2012-07-19 05:43 am (UTC)I'm not in the Supernatural fandom, but from the gifs I see on Tumblr of the way the actors, producers, writers, etc. react to the huge Dean/Castiel fanbase, it feels very positive - they're almost reinforcing the squees. So it doesn't seem like such a far stretch that they might go there. But again, I don't know canon.
I'm currently obsessed out of my mind with Teen Wolf and Derek/Stiles, and since I'm even more familiar with how very homoerotic both the characters and the cast can be, Derek/Stiles might have an even better chance at canoninity than Dean/Castiel. I mean, Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Hoechlin filmed an ad on a boat and literally said, "We're on a ship - pun intended." (Which, as;dlkfasd). At the least I could maybe see there being a friends-with-benefits thing going there that the writers might do just for kicks. BUT WHATEVER, I'M DELUSIONAL.
Although of the list I want Merlin/Arthur the most, I just don't see it happening. Neither the actors who portray our boys (Bradley in particular) nor the writers seem to be very happy with the fans' assertion that Merthur are gay for each other (lol they are tho. And sweet li'l Katie ships it like fiyuhr). Also, it's ~a family show~ which somehow means no gay allowed, I guess. That's annoying, but sadly true.
For John and Sherlock they'll keep the subtext going for sure (and we know there is HELLA subtext. I mean, c'mon, Mark Gatiss has spoken openly about it and how he ships it). But the show itself is basically fanfiction, and in canon John's wife Mary is a big deal, so I don't think they'd skip that. But who knows? Like I said, Gatiss is a stanner, so you never know.
JUNE AND CHLOE OH MY GOD PLEASE. With the tone of the show and the development of their relationship so far I could honestly see it happening. Like, from my point of view? If this were a show where June were a boy it would be a given that these two are gonna end up together, y'know? And I
hopethink the showrunners might eventually see that.BASICALLY I AM A SQUEALY FANGIRL AND INSTEAD OF ANSWERING YOUR POLL I GOT ALL META-Y. I'M THE WORST.

Date: 2012-07-19 06:16 am (UTC)I love Derek/Stiles but I also ship everyone with everyone else. I ship Scott/Stiles. No one ships Scott Stiles. But remember that time Stiles was like, "This newfound heroism is making me very attracted to you. D'you wanna try making out for a sec? Just to see how it feels?" Yeah, he's probably joking, but I rewatched the scene like a million times and he's at least 50% sincere, lol. OH STILES. And anyway name any two characters and I ship them. Erica/Stiles is the newest development (THE BATMAN THING OMFG). And Lydia/Stiles. And Lydia/Allison, actually? And now 'cause of the dancing thing also Jackson/Isaac? WHATEVER WITH THIS AWESOME SHOW.
And yes my GOD the girls are so great. Going in I thought, Great, this is probably going to be one of those shows where the male characters are written as compelling, interesting characters and the girls are just given flat uninteresting non-personalities, but Holland and Crystal bring so much life to their characters, and this season the writing's even better for the ladies, imo. Plus, Erica! I love her so much!!
(wow, I ranted. I'm the worst, ack.)

Date: 2012-07-19 06:39 am (UTC)and so much yes to shipping all the things. it actually took me a while to see stiles/derek but when everyone was talking about it when i first started this show, i was all, WAIT WHAT because derek was like throwing himself at bullets looking out for scott and ngl that is still one of the most underrated relationships on this show. PACK FEEEELINGS. and lydia/allison = ship of competent gloriousness.
ugh pretty much everyone is so great and three-dimensional and varying degrees of grey that it blows my mind. like i felt that even kate, who was all sorts of morally icky and ruthless and psychotic pretty much OWNED THAT SHIT. and i am looking forward to victoria argent's storyline like CRAZY! :O
(HI HANNAH. SORRY FOR ALL THE RANDOM TEEN WOLF FLAIL ON YOUR BLOG~)

Date: 2012-07-19 07:03 pm (UTC)And honestly, I feel like the S6 finale confirmed Dean/Cas for me--they were both so upset at the other's actions and the feels were so intense and...yeah, wow. If they wanna push it even further, that is fine by me, but it's basically canon at this point, as far as I'm concerned.
