Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

2. Prompt format should go thus:

George found it on the sidewalk outside the house long past when anyone would be looking for a lost pet, mewling at the top of a miniature pair of lungs. He cuddled it into his jacket and scrubbed gently at the kitten's wildly flexible neck - no collar or tags, and not a thing to claim her. It should have been sad, but she was a tiny little living spark, squirming and licking and generally being right charming about it, too.

He assumed it was a girl cat, and didn't want to bother the neighbours by checking right outside. He opened the door to a laugh track and two voices mocking the people on telly; it was a good night for both Annie and Mitchell, evidently. George liked those, he popped popcorn and two out of three of them drank tea until they could nearly burst.

"Hey! George! Come on, we're - what's that?!"

Annie spotted his new fur collar first, came forward with her arms up for the kitten. He caught Mitchell's twisted up expression and head shake, but the ghost was persistent. She spun around with the cat cupped in both hands, cooing at it in nonsense.

"Oh, you're a fine little puffball, aren't you? You're a love," she told it sweetly. "What shall we name him?"

Behind her joyous dance, Mitchell stood up with a fixed calm. He threw his hands up in frustration, and George did the same. It was cold out there, he wasn't going to leave an innocent animal out there to freeze.

"Annie, you can't keep the kitten. What if George eats it?"

Mitchell's serious expression held until Annie spun from one roommate to the other, gaping at George as she cuddled the kitten to her sweater. The smirk on the vampire's face dropped just in time for Annie to switch her attention back to Mitchell.

"It's just one night a month, right, and almost never here! We can both watch out for her, and it'll be fine, right," she asked desperately.

"I don't eat cats, Mitchell! I am very much against eating cats," George breathed with heavy insult.

Annie flitted between wanting to comfort him and trying to let Mitchell see how lovely the kitten was. She settled for dropping the kitten onto a vampire lap and stroking George's arm.

"You know I didn't mean it, George," she told him. "D'you want some tea?"

She walked past a dozen mugs of tea on her way to make more, the canned laughter now feeling solely related to his failed turn at feline good samaritan. George tossed his jacket roughly toward the stairs and tossed himself down next to Mitchell.

"What was that about?! I was saving her from being run down in the street . . . or . . . or from a gang of sadistic boys with - You're putting me on," he accused in a whisper. "You're having fun with calling me a cat eater?"

Mitchell set the kitten in his palm, raising it like art on a pedestal. "Don't take it so hard, I was joking. She's a cute little thing, nuh? I had a cat when I was a kid: Satin. My mother named her."

Annie burst back in with mugs, all smiles and pushy grabs to get the cat back. "Satin is brilliant! It's perfect."

The grey furred-bundle curled almost invisibly into Annie's arms, and they smiled as she petted and praised their new roommate generously.

Not that shippy, but still! Sleep!

It rains on Friday for the first time in too long. And not a moment too late – Spike fancies the slayer army’s pungent cocktail of sweat, blood and anxiety was starting to spread to the very ozone layer. (Fear isn’t so appetizing to him these days.)

It’s a cue for Buffy to call it a day off, to the relief of every resident without exception. Well, aside from Andrew. Who arguably did not count so much.

The bags under Buffy’s eyes are the same shade as the cumulonimbus clouds gathering in the graying sky; but heavier, to Spike’s eyes. Yet, trodding down the basement steps, she somehow has the energy to conjure up a smile for him. (For him.)

To his surprise -- and slight terror – she seats herself next to him on the cot (which creaks only slightly from the added weight of her which of course, these days, is only slight), and then promptly proceeds to fall against the sheets with a sigh.

Spike peers down at her face, set in an expression of complete tranquility -- eyes closed, hint of a smile ghosting the edges of her mouth – that’s utterly unfamiliar to him. He used to watch her sleep sometimes, back in those days (-- when no part of her was unfamiliar) -- but the anxiety always seemed to follow her into her unconscious. Only to be expected – she would come to him back then seeking simplicity, which wasn’t the same thing as peace.

He’s pondering this when Buffy suddenly opens her eyes, and gazes up at him.

“Sorry. You don’t mind, do you?”

He can’t help but chuckle. “Your house, pet. Can sleep anywhere you want.”

“Thanks. I mean, I’m not really planning on sleeping, just wanted to rest my eyes for… a little…”

The return of the blissed-out expression informs Spike that she’s successfully trailed off into dreamland. He smirks. He fancies he could probably watch her like that for hours, engrave her features in his memory.

But instead he silently raises himself off the cot, makes his way across the basement and up the stairs. Closes the door behind him.

Not to his surprise, Andrew is hanging round on the other side of it, wearing the sort of expression that makes Spike aware of the advantage of not being conscious right that moment.

“What’s up with Buffy?” Andrew asks, disarmingly curious.

“She’s not to be disturbed,” Spike replies.

“Oh.” A pause. “D’you think she’d like some hot cocoa?”

“What?”

“In my experience, hot beverages are powerful treatments for stress, especially when consumed while watching Red Dwarf. But not the episode where Rimmer pretends to be Lister’s old flame, because that’s just horrifying.”

Spike stares at him. “Yeah. Okay.”

Andrew claps his hands together. “Greeeat. Now do you know if she’s a cinnamon or honey person?”

Spike considers. “Do we have any of those little marshmallows?”

Sam entered her office with the intent of dropping off a report. Nothing more, nothing less, just needing his words condensed. He found himself sidetracked by pie; it was a trap set up by a devious Republican with blonde hair, a beatific smile, and molasses like drawl.

The folder hung forgotten in his hand. “What is that?”

Ainsley looked up from her computer screen. “What is what?”
He pointed. “That.”

“This?” She tugged the plate closer to her, moving it to sit on top of a stack of files.

“Yes, that.” He decided to cut their conversation short before they continued on in circles. “Because it looks like pie.”

She raised an eyebrow, an amused look on her face. No doubt she was thinking how stupid he was and were all Democrats like this. “That’s because it is pie, Sam.”

“Really? Because it doesn’t look like pie.”

She smiled and pushed it back across the desk towards him. The oval shaped pie was fat, puffed up and swollen, the brown crust darker than a normal tan. “It’s fried apple pie. Would you like some?”

“From McDonald’s?”

Her smile dropped and she looked appalled. “No. From home. I took a few vacation days this past weekend. It’s from the North Carolina State Fair to be exact, which, to be honest and completely unbiased, is better than any other states’ around us. Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina. Certainly our food is better. Like the fried apple pie.”

He stared now, trying to keep his face from changing into something that would no doubt find him in trouble. “Do you know how unhealthy that is?”

She shook her head. “No. And I don’t care.”

He continued on. “The calories, the fat, there is nothing good in that for you.”

“Are you implying that I am unhealthy?”

He used the folder to make jabbing motions. “Not to mention the damage all that sugar would do to your teeth.”

Pulling the plate back towards her again, she said, “I’m rescinding my offer. You definitely don’t get any. And there are these things called toothbrushes, Sam.”

He ignored her and rolled on. “But see that’s the problem with Americans today. Nobody cares about proper dental care. Forget dental hygiene, nutritional health has completely decreased over the last several decades. People are satisfied with eating substandard quality fast food. All because it’s convenient and easy—”

“Sam—”

“Forget actual home cooked meals with real food.”

“Sam!” She shouted this time, his name echoing off the pipes.

He stopped, finding himself facing a Gilbert and Sullivan poster. He must have started pacing at some point. He turned back to her. “Yes?”

“You are ruining my pie,” she said the words slowly, blue eyes serious and face still.

“Right,” he nodded. “Sorry.”

She eyed him from her chair. “Did you actually come down here for something?”

He handed over the folder, quiet after his outburst. “Yes. Memo on the new legislative affair for alternative energy sources.”

Humming in the back of her throat, she opened to the first page. “And you’re worried about the language as well for Republicans, I’m guessing.”

That had been implied for him.

“I can get it back to you this afternoon,” she said, turning to the next page.

“Thank you,” he rocked back on his heels after a silent minute. “Well, I’m going to go now.”

“I’m going to enjoy my pie.”

He looked at the brown dough. “Are you sure you—”

She didn’t look up. “Good-bye, Sam.”

He retreated. He needed someone without a huge sweet tooth to listen to his ideas.

The thing about Dennis Calvinson in his parents' vacation house by the lake the summer before tenth grade, and Manuel Phillips in a hotel room after (his) senior prom, and Katie Jenkins in her hot tub after after (her) prom, and Puck, in any one of a ridiculous variety of locales, and yes, alright, Finn that one time-- the thing is, Santana isn't ever going to help them with their algebra homework, or spend three hours (or maybe six hours or, okay, alright, three days) picking out their birthday present, or french braid their hair at six o'clock on a Wednesday night just because she can. The thing about Dennis Calvinson is that he's too loud. The thing about Manuel Phillips is that he wanted to introduce her to his parents (seriously-- seriously!). Katie Jenkins owned one too many polo shirts, and Puck is kind of an asshole anyway, and Finn is so hung up on Ms. Rachel "Excuse Me While I Hit You Over The Head With The Entirety of The Broadway Canon" Berry that he probably doesn't even understand how totally mind-blowing sex with Santana actually was. He probably doesn't even appreciate that she did him a total favor, Jesus.

Besides which, none of them ever looked at her with giant eyes and a wobbly lower lip and said, "You'll be my best friend, right? I don't think I get to have one otherwise," which was probably simultaneously the single best thing about fifth grade and the saddest thing Santana's ever seen, not that she's going to tell anyone about it, ever.

Santana considers and rejects all of this, and instead texts, i'll give u a ride home babe, meet me in parking lot after school because, well. It's an awful lot simpler.
