Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

2. Prompt format should go thus:

It is, at least, better than the teapot recital.

Jeff, Annie, Shirley, Abed, and Pierce sit in the third row, all busting out their own respective expressions of shock, awe, and slight fear. Except for Abed, who's pretty unflappable.

"Interesting," he muses.

On the stage, Britta and Troy are locked in a tango. The premise holds great potential for hilarity. But in reality, there's not a whole lot that's funny. They're both really good. And, honestly, kind of ... well, kind of ...

"Sexy," Jeff says dully. "For some reason, this is--"

"Sexy," Pierce says, with a great deal more zest. And some pervy old man chuckles.

"I feel like I'm watching Twilight," Shirley marvels. From between her fingers, like watching the display head on will result in corneal damage.

"Except," Jeff says, "they're outsexied by pita bread. But this -- this is--"

Troy dips Britta back in a fierce, sudden movement. Their gazes burn bright into each other. Everyone gasps. Time seems to stand still.

"I feel like they're going to start making out any second," Jeff says, transfixed.

"Would it be so wrong?" Annie ponders faintly.

"Maybe," Abed says wisely, "it'd be so wrong it's right."

"Abed, that's your man up there!" Shirley chastises. "Shouldn't you go -- go claim what's yours?"

"I trust him," Abed says simply.

"I wouldn't," Shirley grumbles with a significant stageward glance.

"Guys," Jeff says in his best Group Dad Voice. "This is ridiculous. There's no way there's anything going on between Britta and Troy. Let me say it again for you: Britta and Troy."

"Yeah! That'd be as crazy as Jeff and Annie," Shirley says.

Then everyone remembers how that went.

"Oh," Shirley says weakly. Jeff and Annie very carefully scoot as far apart from each other as possible. There may have been some slight arm rest sharing going on prior to Shirley's little remark.

"Please!" Pierce snorts. "It's not like Jeff and Annie at all. You know why? Jeff and Annie aren't lesbians. There's no way Britta'd give him the time of day. Unless -- Quick. Ay-bed. This is important: is Troy a woman?"

"No," Abed says.

"There," Pierce says, crossing his arms smugly. "Problem solved."

"Not," Jeff says, "even a little bit."

"What's this going to do to the group dynamic??" Annie frets. Onstage, Britta and Troy look like they're about two seconds from licking each other's faces off.

"Hey! SHHHHH. You're ruining the show!" declares the menace sitting in front of them in a grumpy whisper.

"Shut up, Leonard," Jeff scowls. "You're fooling no one."

"Why are you guys looking at us so weird?" Britta asks after the show.

"Yeah, what's up?" Troy says. "You can't get on my case! The professor made all the dudes wear those tights."

"No, she didn't," Britta says, grinning.

"No, she didn't," Troy admits merrily.

"See, he's gay as a basket of puppies," Pierce says, with great satisfaction. "You all have got nothing to worry about!"

"What's gay about puppies?" Troy demands, sullen.

"Worry about what?" Britta says suspiciously.

"Nothing," Annie says.

"Nothing," Jeff says.

"Nothing!" Shirley trills.

"Oookay. Come on, then," Britta says. "We're all still on for dinner, right? Let's get out of here." She loops her arm absently through Troy's.

"Eeep!" says Shirley.

Britta and Troy frown at her, confused.

"Nothing," she mumbles.

"This was a terrible idea," Angel said. "I can't watch. Why did we let him do this?"

Cordelia pried his hands of the edge of the seat before he accidentally broke it. "You practically beat three moms down to get him a place on the team, remember?"

"I wasn't thinking! There are pucks! And ice! And skates are sharp!" Angel looked across the rink and caught Connor's eye. The little boy grinned cheerily and waved, nearly toppling over in the process.

"Clearly didn't inherit vampire grace," Cordelia said, smiling and waving back. "Stop worrying. You've been teaching him hockey since he was born." She put her hand over his and patted it gently.

He twisted his hand and took hers, squeezing gently. "I just can't watch him get hurt."

She nodded. "I know."

"Hey," Gunn said, sitting down behind them. "Has it started yet? Did we miss anything?"

Fred and Wesley sat next to him. "Here," Wesley said, handing Cordelia a hot chocolate. "Is Angel panicking?"

"No," Angel said sullenly.

"Little bit," Cordelia said.

Fred smiled and took a bite out of her hot dog. "I think it's exciting," she said. "Everyone all padded up and ready to play. Maybe we should wear pads when we fight. It'd probably be safer."

"Let's invest in more for Connor," Angel said.

"Hush," Cordelia said, squeezing his hand. "It's starting."

The kids took their positions on the ice. The referee blew the whistle, and the game began.

Slowly, Angel's death grip on Cordelia's hand loosened. Connor wasn't the best player, but then again, none of the five-year-olds were at professional levels. When Connor managed to get the puck in the net, Angel stood up and cheered louder than anyone else.

"Feeling better?" Cordelia asked as he sat down.

Angel nodded. "Yeah." He winced as Connor tripped and fell, then smiled in relief when he pushed himself right back up and kept going. "I can't wait to take him to Kings game!"

I interpreted "sees" a little loosely. Also, this kind of ran away with me. Yeah.



It is Christmas Eve, and it is snowing in Paris.

Rory spreads her thickly coat-enclosed arms wide and twirls until she can feel the ground waving beneath her. She falls backward onto the park bench, the trees and buildings and streets spinning around her.

The snow falls lightly and silently, slowly muffling the noises of the city to which she has grown so accustomed.

How long she sits on the bench, Rory does not really know. She sits and watches and thinks until the gentle gusts of the wind become bone-chilling on her numbed legs, until she has rehashed the last several years of her life.

The snow and the silence change something within her, she senses. There are fewer regrets this time, less self-admonishment and her guilt seems mitigated. She thinks of her mother and of the exhilarating, contagious self-confidence Lorelai (almost) always exhibited, and she remembers how hard she tried to be just like Lorelai for so many years.

But she had missed a step.

Rory smiles, because she understands now. Lorelai's (nearly) unwavering trust in herself came from the knowledge that she could handle whatever was thrown at her, as she'd brought more crushing burdens upon herself and learned to bear them with grace.

Sadly, she wishes someone had told her how much climbing to the top of Maslow's pyramid would cost her.

By now the snow is falling fast and sticky and wet, and Rory is beginning to shiver. Four blocks away, she knows, is a café with amazing coffee and a sign hung on the door reading "Oui! Nous sommes ouvert le 24 décembre!"

Head bent into the now-gusting wind, she hurries down the avenue. Too late, she sees the man headed straight towards her, his vision obscured by the umbrella he wisely carries. The collision is inevitable, but Rory tries to avoid it nevertheless. Her dodge is too little, too late, though, and as she clips his shoulder, his umbrella drags over her hat.

They stumble past each other awkwardly, with Rory mumbling "Pardon" into the snow-covered sidewalk.

Seconds later, a hand falls on her shoulder.

"Rory?" asks the umbrella-carrier.

She gapes. "Jess?"

"What are you–" "Why are you–" Their words collide and stumble as awkwardly as they themselves had not a minute earlier.

They smile uncomfortably and make eye contact – real honest eye contact – for the first time. Another piece of the puzzle of how she can become this person she knows she wants to be clicks into place.

"I was headed to a great cafe just around the corner," Rory opens. "Do you want to come?"

Jess smiles and a tiny piece of her is seventeen again, but she ignores the feeling because that's not a time they need to revisit (again). "I'd love to," he replies. "Would you like to share my umbrella? You look pretty wet."

"My knight in slightly soggy black armor," Rory answers, smirking.

After a few seconds filled with entirely too many elbows while they try and arrange two people under an umbrella made for one, his arm falls over her shoulders and the world is just a little bit more right.
