The Shiny Happy Comment Ficathon!

Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

Ergo:

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

2. Prompt format should go thus:

Fandom -- Pairing or characters -- prompt

3. For the fic you've written, please put the following in your comment's subject line: 'Fandom -- pairing -- title.'

4. Be nice!

5. Spread the fun, if you are so inclined!

6. Go forth and have a merry happy good time. :)

Doctor Who, Doctor/Rose, take my hand, live while you can

Doctor Who, Eleven/Rose, Top Hats Optional

[identity profile] laeria.livejournal.com 2010-11-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The day Rose proposed, we were stranded in Limbo, which is an awkward state of metadimensional trimorphism and also a thoroughly entertaining party game I happen to excel at. Rose was somewhat arc-shaped, but that was all right, because looks don't always matter. I was triangular and brainstorming, so it's quite miraculous I heard her at all.

"So, if we get outta this, will you marry me?" she asked. I nodded. Actually, I wobbled my hypothenuse in assent. But that was all right. We did get outta it, obviously, through a spot of innovative reverse exorcism (The only way out of Limbo is through Hell, apparently.) We got to the TARDIS and then I said "Yes" properly and she said "Yes what" and I said "Yes I will" and she said "Of course you will, since you're a bit clever." which is an understatement, but that is all right too, because love knows no boundaries.

In conclusion, Ponds, it is always a good idea to marry one's ex. And you are both invited to my wedding. Top hats optional.

I feel like you were born to write Doctor Who fanfiction because your control over the utterly absurd and ridiculous never ceases to astound me.

Fantastic job with this. It made me giggle all the way through. And I love that the whole thing was a story to the Ponds. I hope both Amy and Rory come in top hats.

Re: Doctor Who, Eleven/Rose, Top Hats Optional

Thank you! Amy in a top hat fills me with pure glee.

(I'm kind of very secretly working on writing you ALL the Doctors. Eleven's the most writable though.)

I've watched some of Three and Four. They're both very charming and I adore Sarah Jane & Romana -- Oh, Romana, is probably my absolute favorite -- but it is quite hard to get through.

AWESOMENESS AFOOT.

(I didn't even watch the Rose years proper, I've caught the Ninth and Tenth Doctors in bits and pieces but only watched Eleven's season in full. But it does not matter at all, because this is brilliant and that is that.)

I'm a bit rusty with the pairing. :S

The mood is very romantic – the low lights, the soft sound of the violins in the background, the two of them sitting beside each other, the wine – but as with everything about them, it is not what it seems.

She pours the wine for him. He swirls the wine in the glass before smelling it and taking a sip. It tastes excellent.

“If we were in a different era of our lives, I would have assumed the wine will be laced with poison.” He says, deadpan.

“Oh, please.” She replies with a scoff as she lifts her glass to her lips, “Not poison.”

“Sodium pentothal then?”

A smile appears on her face, the one that tells him not to bother with waiting for an answer. And for the first time in his life (this second life), he doesn’t care if he doesn’t get answers.

The waiter arrives with their meal. They look at each other for a second before they started eating.

“I didn’t expect that our first outing as a newly resurrected couple would be a simple reconnaissance operation.” She says, “Though I did expect something a little bit more… exciting.”

He leans towards her so that she’ll be the only one who will be able to hear him, “I’m thinking it’s best if we stop including murders during our rendezvous.”

She pouts, “It wouldn’t be half as fun.” She states and then adds, “Besides, if you think about it, we’re doing the world a favor by killing off bad, useless people.”

“We’re also supposed to be dead.”

“Yes. And so…?” she asks, slicing her food with her knife with smooth precision.

“And we promised Kendall that we’ll behave and that we’ll lay low on this one.”

She turns to look at him and gives him a look, “Even Kendall knows you don’t listen to him.”

“I listen to Kendall.” He replies and takes a bit of the steak she sliced from her plate, “Sometimes.” Only when he gets something in return.

He knows that she knows there’s something he’s not telling her. But she lets it go, knowing full well that she’ll get his answers from him, probably later, in bed.

The dinner is exquisite but what he enjoyed the most is that he can openly watch her. It wouldn’t seem strange to everybody in the restaurant – to them, they’re an old married couple having a romantic dinner – but it is strange for them. For the first time, he is sure that she doesn’t have an ulterior motive for anything. For the first time, they can actually act like an old married couple (albeit with a violent history and are supposed to be dead).

For the first time since he found out the truth about her, he isn’t afraid of eating food she’s offers him.

“It was a barbiturate.” She says after dinner and they were walking along the side street. Their arms are linked together; they’re just another pair having a late-night stroll. They don’t look like they’re following their target.

He glances at her with a puzzled expression. She explains, “The last time you declined the wine, I put a barbiturate in it…” she trails off as she shrugs her shoulders, “I’m not going to do that again to you, if you’re worried about it.”

“That’s good to know.” He says dryly. He feels her put a hand on his arm.

“Of course, it wasn’t a lethal dose…”

“Irina. It’s fine.”

She glances at him and smiles, “Good.”

He smiles back at her. He can get used to this— free from stress and from Rambaldi, with Kendall popping in once in a while asking for minute favors like reconnaissance operations, and murder-free dinners. It might take her a while to wrap her head around it, but she’s Irina Derevko.

“Because come to think of it, putting barbiturates in a bottle of good wine is just wasteful.”

Sherlock; Sherlock/John; Sherlock uses everyone's tendency to assume he and John are a couple to his advantage. For purely case-related reasons, of course.

Sherlock - Sherlock/John - Less Than Clandestine - 1/2

[identity profile] amazingly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-09 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This got rather longer than was intended! Ah, well.

----

It all begins while Sherlock and John are tracking down a jewel thief named Julian Finn who is so monumentally, devastatingly dull that Sherlock is almost ready to send him a postcard with a few ideas, just to bring a bit of light into what is clearly one of the dimmer corners of the world.

But that isn't the point, of course. The point is that while they are asking Julian's employer-- a slightly plump older woman with a penchant for the calling them handsome young gentleman-- about his daily routine, Sherlock notices that she is staring at John's bandage.

Admittedly that's become a habit of Sherlock's as well, lately. And while it does tend to summon the smell of chlorine and a sharp, panicked twist in his stomach, it also helps to remind him that neither of them died a fiery and unpleasant death in a swimming pool, which is useful.

Sherlock reaches out and tucks the edge of the gauze back underneath John's collar almost habitually (because only he gets to fret over John, it's a rule) and can see in an instant that he's given the woman Ideas.

They turn out to be surprisingly useful Ideas, because she begins to positively gush and in between offers of biscuits and assurances that she's always loved the music of Elton John, she spits out a few things which may actually prove useful. Sherlock hums thoughtfully under his breath and holds the door for John as they leave.

----

"Oy, what're you doing here?" A voice demands, and when Sherlock turns the voice is matched to a face. The voice is a baritone with a bit of forced gravel in it, and the face is playing along splendidly-- clearly upper-middle-class but not particularly pleased about the fact. This is a man who wakes up in the morning and almost moisturizes out of habit before he remembers the fact that he is supposed to be tough now. Sherlock heaves a sigh.

You work in a restaurant which specializes in generically pleasant French cuisine, he wants to say. Exactly how intimidating do you imagine yourself to be?

"We are investigating a murder," he says instead. "If that's quite alright with you?"

For good measure, he also curls his fingers around John's wrist and holds on, smoothing his thumb over warm skin.

"Investigating a what?" The man says. "I'll call the police, don't think I won't."

"At last count the police owe us-- how many favors was it, John?" Sherlock asks distractedly, his eyes flitting around the room. It's rather nice to have an anchor point as he does so, actually, to be able to feel John's heartbeat kicking against his fingers.

"Twenty-seven I think," John says calmly. "Twenty-eight if you're counting the thing with the--"

"We absolutely count that," Sherlock says, running an experimental finger under the cuff of John's jumper. "There were weasels. And on Valentine's Day, too. There were so many infinitely more pleasing things we could have been doing with our time."

"I'm, er. I'm just going to go and check with management," the man says, and disappears. John raises an eyebrow, and Sherlock shrugs.

"Well he'll be back any minute. It seems hazardous to drop the charade now," he says, and drags John over to examine the window sill.

And sure enough, the man does return-- with the blessings of "management," whoever they are, and instructions to keep an eye on the proceedings.

"Er, so. The two of you are--" the man says, and then makes a hand gesture which is so vague as to be utterly pointless.

"Absolutely," Sherlock says, "and we're wildly exhibitionist as well."

"Really?" John says after the man has fled back to the front of the store in what he probably thinks is an extremely manly fashion. "Really, Sherlock?"

"He's gone, isn't he?" Sherlock says, and goes back to sniffing the doorjamb.

Sherlock - Sherlock/John - Less Than Clandestine - 2/2

[identity profile] amazingly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-09 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Lovely place you've got here," John says as they are ushered through the front door by Melanie, whose missing boyfriend also happens to be this week's favorite suspect. After a moment of awkward silence, John elbows Sherlock none-too-subtly in the ribs (something he is, aggravatingly, at an ideal height to do).

"Hmm? Oh, yes, a nice flat," Sherlock agrees.

"A good deal nicer than ours, anyway," John says, "providing there aren't any body parts in the toaster."

Melanie blinks, and then rallies with a whispered, "Oh, are the two of you...?" in Sherlock's direction.

Sherlock considers this for a split second and then, taking in the pink wallpaper and the romance novel splayed open on the kitchen table, says, over John's halfhearted protests, "Yes, actually. How'd you guess?"

Instead of answering, the girl begins to wax poetic about her "darling" Max who is, in all likelihood, the architect of a stunningly gruesome double murder. Sherlock makes distantly impressed noises and examines the mantle with his magnifying glass until he registers that silence has fallen over the room. John coughs.

Sherlock rises from his crouch near the fireplace. Evidently the vapid Melanie requires conversational reciprocation. He may or may not take the opportunity to describe his doctor in rather glowing terms (brave and loyal and a good deal less stupid than I had every right to expect all make an appearance). John is considerably pinker by the end of it, which Sherlock decides is just fine.

----

By Sherlock's unfailingly precise count, over the next four months their Grand Love Affair (as John has taken to calling it) gains them invaluable information in three cases, and useful information in no less than twelve. It causes young women to giggle at John and mutter about "all the lovely ones being taken or, you know," and stern old ladies to harangue Sherlock with impromptu lectures about the care and feeding of John Watson. It inspires four looks from Lestrade which Sherlock might go so far as to term fond, it is responsible for Anderson choking on his coffee, and it moves Donovan to lay a sympathetic hand on John's shoulder and shake her head. It also accrues for them two free bottles of wine at two separate restaurants, which is a rather nice perk.

Things probably would've carried on in much the same fashion except that one Thursday evening as they consume a celebratory, case-closed meal of takeout Chinese, John mutters something which sounds suspiciously like, "You don't always need an excuse you know."

It is just barely possible that five minutes later their hands brush across the table and do not move apart.

<3! I love these two. All John needs to do is stop protesting.

You're doing a great job filling prompts here. And as a side note, having had a few conversations with my brother on the matter, the line is simply 'the good ones are taken'. No matter what way they swing.

From the beginning, this had become a routine of sorts for them.

Words could not express how difficult it was for one to dress in the morning with neither eyes to see, or both hands to aid him. He, who had been self sufficient for as long as he could remember, now found himself in need of the aide of others for the most mundane things – from fastening a button, to lighting a candle, to telling him which was water and which was wine.

For dressing in the morning, he was more than pleased to have the task switched from John, however well meaning, to his wife.

The task, instead of demeaning and frustrating, was now something soft and almost be looked forward to in his mind. A weakness was not impossible to overcome while in her presence, but something to gently chisel away at, like an artist upon a block of stone. He felt close to her in these moments, close enough to imagine the straight fall of her hair and the fairy flutter of her hands as she assisted him. She smelled of something wild – like pine woods and mountain flowers. Like autumn cresting and leaves falling before winter. He shook his head at his thoughts, wondering, as he always did, how they managed to take such a spin when he was in her presence.

As she would help him, she would speak. Today, the rainclouds that had sat over their corner of the world for the last several days had lifted. He could no longer feel the thunder in his bones, and so he took her word that the sky was blue and endlessly so. He had enough images from a lifetime to sustain his mind's eye, and with her words, he felt those memories sharpening and clarifying into something that he could almost see again.

He tries to tell her this once, and though he could not see it, he imagined that she was smiling nonetheless.

With her, he had a vast repertoire of remembered gazes, indeed to draw from. His Jane had a face not accustomed to smiling, in the beginning. Indeed, it was as if the tired muscles of her face were learning to live again when she was with them . . . He had enjoyed placing that spark in her eyes; that curve to her lips . . .

His thoughts were interrupted as she helped him place on his shirt. The motions were simple, arm in, turn once, then other arm in. She smoothed the sleeves down, and as her hand trailed down his arm, her hand rested on the mutilated end of his own, right where his hand should have been. Her fingers were soft over the angry flesh; beauty granting the beast with a moment of acceptance. He stared stonily ahead at the touch, as he did every day when she assisted him. Sometimes, being without sight was as much a blessing as a curse. There was as much as he wished to look on as he didn't care to see again.

Her other hand raised to touch the corner of his frown, as if her touch alone could sooth the harsh lines into something soft again. “Cheer up, old man,” she said, a playful timbre to her voice. “There are far worse things in life to be without.”

Practical Jane. His Jane . . . and he knows her words to be so. He holds a hand over hers for a moment, needing the contact of skin and skin to serve his where his eyes failed. “Of that,” he whispered in reply to her words, “I am most acutely aware.”

He wished he could see her blush as well as feel her skin warm under his hand. Thankfully, he has more than one memory of that to serve his mind's eye. Before, he had taken every moment he could to challenge an emotion from her – be it perplexed curiosity, vexation, or even modest embarrassment. All had been gifts she had been unconscious in giving; and gifts that he had cherished as treasures.

His vest was next, and he took a moment to ask her, “You are quite sure that you aren't dressing me in something horrendous, are you, Jane? I believe that there is at least one or two pair of eyes in this house that haven't been bewitched by yours. They would tell me truly if I came out looking a fool.”

“Your wardrobe is in perfect order,” she assured him. “I have no reason to jest with you so.”

“Ah, so I have good reason to keep from inspiring your ire to keep from further retaliation?”

“It is a fact that I would not contest,” she said teasingly. Her hands tugged gently from where she was tying his cravat. She had become an expert in manners of his wardrobe in the past few months. For which he was grateful for. For weeks he had had John retie his cravat for him after Jane departed, which he never precisely told his wife – even though he was certain she knew so anyway. She was remarkably astute, his Jane.

She helped him don his waistcoat next, and he let his eyes follow the sound of her as she fretted over him like a dragonfly over a stream. Some days, he liked to think that his vision was improving, however slightly. And that ideal of a dream was easy to visualize when she was with him as she was now . . . When he could open his eyes to image again, he wished for her to be the first thing he saw.

Today, he likes to think that his sight is better than days prior. He thinks that the dress she is wearing is blue, but does not ask for fear of being wrong. Was that white on her sleeves? Lining her neck. He rested a hand on the crook of her arm rather than help her fasten the buttons to his waistcoat, feeling lace line the sleeves, and trying to line the vision up in his mind. His efforts, however, yielded little. There were only shadows, passing and parting but still bemired in dark things . . .

“There,” came Jane's satisfied voice, oblivious to his train of thought. “You once again look like a presentable member of society.”

He knew that she was looking at him; holding his blind gaze as if he was with sight. He could feel his skin tingle with the knowledge in the way of things were merely known rather than seen.

“If it makes my visage more acceptable to my lady,” he said, his tone teasing as he gave a mocking bow. He looked to where her voice was, hoping that he was meeting her gaze.

“It does,” she said. Her voice held a mock haughtiness, light and pleasing to his ear. Somehow, it was completely becoming on her.

“Still completely hideous?” he asked her, as he did every morning.

“Unfortunately so,” she returned, as expected.

When he chuckled, the sound was low and rusty; but over time it was becoming less and less so.

Her hands were still clasped in his, ready to lead even as they offered support. The tightened, however slightly at the sight of his disposition. In his mind, he could imagine the contentment in her eyes . . . the memory of her glowing countenance is enough to supplant his lack of sight. The memory was so tangible, that for a moment he could believe that light shone where her eyes should have been to his gaze, parting the shadows, and making them as inconsequential as mist. It was that light amongst the dark of his vision that gave him hope.

His heart clenched at the form of sight, and while the knowledge of what recovery may have been impending curled his lips into a smile, he kept the knowledge from his wife for the moment in order to lean down and kiss her. She was smiling against his lips, and the hand that curved daintily against the back of his neck was a warm counterpoint to the gentle weight of her as she pressed herself into his arms. She was something ethereal to him at times, almost mythical as he held her; his sense of touch insisting that she was there and so even while he remained blind to it. He wondered if the marvel of holding her would ever wear off as the time passed by them.

He blinked as he pulled away from her. And before him, he liked to imagine, the light of his sight merged with the blue and the pale tones of hers, becoming something poignant . . . A shade akin to hope in his mind.

The Office, Michael & Toby, Valentine's Day

I need this to be written

The Office | Michael & Toby | Don't Go Breakin' My Heart

[identity profile] firthgal.livejournal.com 2010-11-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Toby was used to not receiving anything for Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t like it was a big deal or anything. A box of chocolates (the caramel would stick to his teeth), a heart-shaped card (a paper cut just waiting to happen), he didn’t need those hassles in his life. He was perfectly fine staying Valentineless. It never bothered him at all when Kelly would come in with a giant teddy bear holding a heart that had “I wub you” stitched into it (besides, Toby knew for a fact that she bought it for herself and told everyone that it was from Ryan). It didn’t bother him when Andy had dressed up as Cupid and serenaded Erin with a rendition of “I Think I Love You” (Toby did have to reprimand him for wearing inappropriate attire in the workplace, though, so… And he was pretty sure that the whole thing did bother Gabe). Jim and Pam didn’t even bother Toby anymore on Valentine’s Day. Well, sure, Toby still made a Valentine for Pam every year (with glitter and lace and an original poem written inside), but, just like every year since he’d known her, he never had the courage to actually give it to her (he has them all stored in a box in the bottom drawer of his desk. Sometimes he takes them out and rereads them all and imagines Pam being so touched by them that she breaks down into tears and engulfs him in a hug and decides to divorce Jim because she finally realizes that she’s been in love with Toby all along). And it really didn’t bother Toby when Michael would give out a Valentine to everyone in the office except for him (maybe Toby would get a little excited whenever Michael would come into the annex showering Ryan and Kelly with paper hearts and giving them each a cupcake, and maybe every year a little part of Toby would hope that Michael would finally include him, but it was inevitable that Michael would just turn to him and go, “Oh, blech, are you still here? You don’t get a cupcake,” [Michael shoves the last cupcake into his mouth and talks around it] “and do you know why? Because these are for people who deserve love, Toby! Ugh, I can’t even enjoy this cupcake when I’m looking at you. Only you could ruin the joy that comes from eating something so delicious”).

Toby was used to not receiving anything for Valentine’s Day, and that’s why it shocked him when he saw a heart-shaped cookie sitting on his desk when he returned from lunch. It had pink icing with a sloppy brown smiley face on it. He wasn’t sure why, but as he stood there holding the cookie in his hand, he suddenly felt… warm. Happy. Giddy? His vision even blurred from the tears that snuck up on him. He smiled, bigger than he’d smiled in a long time, and he lifted the cookie to his mouth, savoring that first bite. It was a little burnt, and not all that good, really, but for Toby, it was like a taste of heaven. It was—

“NO!”

Toby choked and turned to see Michael coming towards him. “Oh, hey, Michael, what can I d—“

Michael slapped the cookie out of his hand. Yeah, he really… he did that.

“What… why did you…” Toby kept looking from his hand to the (now crushed) cookie on the floor.

“Damn it, Toby! That wasn’t for you.”

“But… it was on my desk.”

“So you ate it?”

“Well... yeah.”

“Of course you did. Of course you did! God, Toby! Augh!” And with that he knocked some folders off of Toby’s desk and walked out in a huff.

Toby sighed and looked down at the cookie. The very broken cookie, and if Toby really cared, he’d say it was a metaphor for his heart. Oh well, it had been nice… for a minute or two.

OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS! Oh, Toby! With your box of Valentines for Pam. And Michael's hilarious cupcake rant, and Kelly buying a teddy bear for herself every year and then saying it was from Ryan, and cupid Andy, and okay, I love, LOVE that Michael left a love cookie in memory of Holly on Toby's desk. My heart was wrenched for Michael and Toby at the same time, which is a rare feat.

ALTOGETHER JOYFUL.

I AM GLAD YOU ENJOYED IT! Even though it wasn't entirely fluffy. But, you know, it's Toby! Nothing ever goes right for poor Toby.

This sorta broke my heart, but I adored it still. Oh, Toby, you need a hug so much. You too, Michael.

Clearly, they should just hug each other.

Hee, I know this was supposed to be the happy fic meme, but I found it impossible to let Toby be happy for more than a minute. He just wouldn't be Toby if things actually went good for him.

Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
