The Shiny Happy Comment Ficathon!

Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

Ergo:

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

2. Prompt format should go thus:

Fandom -- Pairing or characters -- prompt

3. For the fic you've written, please put the following in your comment's subject line: 'Fandom -- pairing -- title.'

4. Be nice!

5. Spread the fun, if you are so inclined!

6. Go forth and have a merry happy good time. :)

TWW, Ainsley, (208): What's a "vodkaffle"?; (608): It's where she puts vodka in the waffle mix.

(College shenanigans)

The West Wing - Ainsley - Last Friday night, yeah we danced on tabletops

[identity profile] amazingly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Title is from a Katy Perry song. I'm music-snobbishly pleased that I had to Google it, which is ridiculous because I am such a music philistine, really.

----

"Come on in," Lisa says, opening the door. "She's making vodkaffles."

"What in God's name is a vodkaffle?" Hayley asks, shedding her coat. Ainsley appears in the kitchen doorway, holding a bottle of vodka and grinning like a loon. Jennifer crowds into the apartment.

"You're flashing the Bat Signal over there Ainsley!" She says happily, toeing off her heels. Hayley sighs and kicks the shoes into the corner, returning the entryway to some semblance of order.

"Really? Vodka in waffles?" She asks.

"It's Friday night!" Ainsley says. "I'll put whatever I want in the waffles. Do you know anywhere around here where a girl could get her hands on some absinthe?"

"That's very, like, Vincent van Gogh of you," Hayley says, at the same time that Jennifer, in her best swooning Southern Belle accent, says, "Oh what wild and crazy shenanigans you get up to. Vodka in waffles! Whatever will your parents say?"

"Ew, van Gogh," Ainsley says, and flicks waffle batter in Jennifer's general direction.

"I see what you're doing there, Hayes, trying to get me liquored up via food fight," Jennifer says, attempting to lick her own nose.

"Don't you have a Young Republicans thing tomorrow?" Hayley asks, passing Jennifer a wash cloth. Ainsley sighs.

"I am the Young Republicans on this campus. And I plan on being very lenient with myself, no matter how many hangover-induced typos are in the minutes of my meeting. My meeting with me."

"It's not just you," Lisa says, letting herself into the apartment. "It's you and that girl with the Thomas Jefferson quote tattooed on her ankle. Also, I see that you've started the festivities without me. Also also, why didn't I know we had vodka in the house?"

"Because I wanted to get to use it, duh," Ainsley says. "Just because you want to vixenishly seduce that guy from the bookshop on Main Street does not mean that you get to steal my liquor to do it."

"It should," Lisa says, pouting. "And why don't you come down there with me some time? I'm sure your winsome, blond ways would have him saying more than 'Have a good day, ma'am.'"

She sinks morosely into the armchair. Jennifer gives her a comforting pat on the arm.

"Because, everyone in that bookstore hates me," Ainsley replies, stirring the waffle mix with wild abandon. "You ask one time if they're planning to stock the Reagan autobiography and you're practically banned for life. I ask you!"

"Oh honey," Hayley says with a sigh. "You mentioned Reagan, really?"

"I'll mention whomever I like," Ainsley says. "And don't start critiquing my politics or you won't get any vodkaffles."

This is fantastic. Thank you so much for filling this!

Harry Potter - Tom Riddle/Bellatrix Lestrange - All is loneliness before me

[identity profile] amazingly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Bellatrix is happy? I don't know, Bellatrix Lestrange + shiny happy is not the easiest to achieve! :P

Title is from a Janis Joplin song (called, shockingly, "All Is Loneliness").

----

Bellatrix's earliest memory is of her mother, pale skin and wide, dark eyes, cooing over her darling firstborn girl.

"You will be beautiful, my love," her mother said. "Beautiful and powerful, of course. They will all be so proud of you. So proud."

Bellatrix's father never called her "darling," but on her eleventh birthday, when she returned home from a day of shopping with the finest Slytherin green robes money could buy, he called her "the pride of the House of Black," which was infinitely better.

Bellatrix grew up in a mansion, a stately, twisted old place with centuries of portraits on the walls: the entire family staring down their noses at her with a regal, cold air. Her mother always stopped to smile quiveringly at them when she walked down the hall, grateful for her inclusion in the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black.

"We are so lucky, darling," she murmured one night after dinner. "So lucky to be a part of a family with so much to be proud of. Such pure blood. I had to marry for it but you, my beautiful Bella, you have been born into it. Someday you will understand what that means."

Bellatrix understands what it means the moment she sets foot within the walls of Hogwarts. Half of the students aren't even of pure blood, she can tell that much immediately. She curls into herself on the first night, the curtains of her four-poster providing flimsy protection against the mercilessly gray stone walls. She can feel this place trying to dilute her magic, trying to seep into her veins and make her something ordinary.

"Seven years," she whispers into the stifling air. "Seven years and you can leave. You'll never come back again."

But seven years is a long time to spend being dragged down, weighed on by students and professors and ideas that are so dull, so common. There are so few people in this school who know what it means to feel centuries of magic humming through them. Seven years is a long time to spend being hemmed in. Being flattened. So at the end of seven years Bellatrix bursts out into the real world in a panic, desperate to be among people who at the very least know when to bow down.

Tom will make the world bow down, she knows. Tom will be "my Lord" when all is said and done, and he will make everyone-- even those hopeless Mudbloods who crowd the halls of Hogwarts-- understand what it is to be worthy. Tom reminds her of the simple elegance in a well-cast spell and of the sheer, raw joy in performing the ancient magic. The promises he whispers while the rest of the world waits, unaware, are grand and sweeping and wonderful, and after seven years of dull terror the world bursts back into color before her eyes.

Re: Harry Potter - Tom Riddle/Bellatrix Lestrange - All is loneliness before me

[identity profile] ever-neutral.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
OMIGOD. THANK YOU. (I seriously did not expect anybody to take up the challenge of happy Bellatrix/Voldemort.)

But this. This is perfect. Flawless Bellatrix POV, I even almost sympathize with her racism! Which... is a job well done, as far as I'm concerned. And this:

after seven years of dull terror the world bursts back into color before her eyes.

This is legit beautiful. It is. I do not know how you accomplished it, but it is actually poignant.

Sigh. Shippery bliss.

[identity profile] amazingly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously did not expect anybody to take up the challenge of happy Bellatrix/Voldemort

I saw it and I thought, "what madness!" and then, pretty much immediately following on that thought was, "I MUST TRY IT" so, you know. That says something about me I am sure. :P

And I am, er. "Glad that you sympathized with her racism" just sounds a bit off but nevertheless! I am glad, because that was sort of the point. :]

I'm so happy that you liked it! It was such a totally unexpected prompt, you rock for leaving it. :D

Hunger Games - Katniss/Peeta - give me freedom, give me fire

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-13 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Dearest Chilla, what is this Hunger Games that you are reccing?

[identity profile] fragmentedsky.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's a book, dear. You know, those things with words I always have all over my room?

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you own them? Can I borrow?

[identity profile] laeria.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Dearest Desie, it is, as [profile] fragmentedsky says, a book. (I like [profile] fragmentedsky.)

Moreover, it is a trilogy of books, penned by one Suzanne Collins, who I suspect comes from the Whedon school of "all shall love me and despair", because she will make you love the characters and then kill most of them off gruesomely. It's brilliant. Also, the worldbuilding is the very best ever. If you desire more info, holler, but I recommend going out and getting The Hunger Games (which is the first book) right now, reading it, running out at half past three AM in a mad frenzy to get the next two books, reading those, spending a fortnight thoroughly depressed and amazed and unable to look at bread without weeping, then send me a nice PM thanking me for the rec and telling me who you ship in it.

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You would like [livejournal.com profile] fragmentedsky. She's obnoxious and mean like you. But let's hope you doesn't see this comment because I'm hoping she can lend me these books.

[identity profile] fragmentedsky.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You should introduce us. It's only proper. Who is this person? Their profile is uninformative. Hello, cool person!

I don't technically own them, and yet somehow they are currently in my bag. Good Roommate owns them, and is generally more than willing to loan them out, but if I love it I may buy my own copies. Either way, it shouldn't be hard to get them to you.

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* FINE. Abby, this is Chilla, a dear friend from back in my days of Harry Potter forums (or more specifically the Draco Malfoy forum). She has the tendency to go internet absent for years without a word, but we love her anyway because when she is here she is wonderfully snarky and annoyingly hilarious. Plus, she likes Doctor Who and BtVS. This is all I ask for in a friend (*looks at you pointedly*). Anyway, her profile has no info because alas she only uses lj for comment ficathons like this.

Okay, I will camp out in your apartment when I get back to the country and read these books! I need something new to dive into and I'm starting to worry about my level of television intake.

Harrumph. I only went absent for years once.

(Now I've only been absent for a month, and what do I come back to? Neville/Ginny fic. Oh I love you sometimes.)

Hi! I'm Chilla. I disappear often and utterly and then apparently come back to the best Finnickfic ever, so, <3.

Hunger Games - Annie/Finnick - for I have longed to love deep water

the hunger games - finnick/annie - so come again to the deep blue sea

[identity profile] fragmentedsky.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Victor’s Village is on the water.

Probably, in the past, this has been considered an ideal spot. It wraps around a bay so blue that the color melts into the sky when the sun is at its highest point. The fishermen don’t come here, not because there aren’t fish but because there’s a ring of large rocks at the bay’s entrance, making the area private, perfect. Annie can remember a time when she would have given anything to live here, even in a little cardboard box, just to be able to live on these shores, to swim every day until she couldn’t and then fall into the white-warm sand and let the small waves bury her when high tide came in.

She even remembers one morning, years ago, absently, thinking the chance to live there might even be worth getting chosen for the Hunger Games. She quashed the thought immediately, but she can’t help wondering if it’s why the little slip of paper with her name on it was pulled out.

In the fourteen hours she spent in the water at the Hunger Games, in the dark water under the dark sky as she was surrounded by the gasps and gurgles and bloated corpses of her fellow players, she could think of nothing but that moment. That throwaway thought that had doomed her to die this way. There had only been five players left but she couldn’t keep count of the cannon shots, and when they pulled her up into the hovercraft she thought it was because she’d drowned and just not noticed.

Now she goes down to the bay every day. She measures the distance with her feet from her door to the water but she never goes in, never lets it touch her. She knows, someday, high tide will rise higher and swallow her, leave her to tread water until her muscles melt off her bones.

Today she’s up early. She measures. Eighty-one, eighty-two...

There’s something in the water.

A golden head rises out of the water, bright green eyes fixed on her. She recognizes him, of course; everyone recognizes Finnick Odair. He gives her an odd sort of smile, and she recognizes that too - she couldn’t tell you what it means, but it belongs to those who know what it’s like to be in the arena, and no one else.

“You never swim anymore.”

She takes a moment to sort out what he’s saying. She had been trying to count the waves, to see if they might chase him up the beach. The three steps he’s taken out of the water are still deep in the sand, though, so she must be safe. For now. For this moment, which once you’ve been in the arena is all you can really ask for. “I never swim,” she says.

“You used to, didn’t you?”

“How would you know?” She asks irritably. This intimacy they share is uncomfortable in its perpetual reminder. She wishes he would go away. She wants to make him say it - because it’s the reason you won.

But he doesn’t even hesitate, and that isn’t what he says. “Because you used to sneak out to learn to swim when you were a kid. I was always afraid to, but watching you swimming behind the boats at night was what made me want to learn.”

She hesitates. “I forgot. I forgot how.”

He shakes his dripping hair a bit, and water goes everywhere. For the first time in ages, she doesn’t leap away from it like acid. Drops land on her cheeks, cool and open, and she remembers what it feels like to rise up from deep water, toward the light, the pressure dropping as the whole world under the waves gets bigger and bigger.

“I can teach you,” he says.

Hhh. I knew I liked you, and it's not even cause Ruth says you're the best ever.

This is perfect. I could honestly feel the water, the joy of water in the last paragraph. (Next-to-last? "toward the light", anyway, which, yesss.) I love that she was Finnick's hero even before the Games, I love her unreasonable amplified guilt. I love that she recoils from water (like Johanna!) but also yearns for it. I love that her life in Victor's Village is basically a summary of the life of Victors - you got what you wanted and now you can't stand it. I love the ray of hope that is Finnick (but also the fact she may have been his ray of hope before this). I lovelovelove the idea that fishermen's kids aren't allowed to know to swim but Annie does it anyway.

Thank you for writing me this, I'll be rereading it forever.

Aw, thank you! Hey, I appreciate you giving me the excuse. It needs editing like whoa, I wrote it when I was bored in class, but I'm glad you like it. I just finished all three books and I needed some closure or just some more stuff with characters I did not get enough of (Finnick was like my favorite, I loved him to pieces, and I adored Johanna; I'm just glad one of them survived.)

Anyway, it's nice to meet you. I'm Abby.

Cinna was my favourite, but Finnick's the immediate runner up. Along with Annie. Finnick/Annie as a unit. Makes me so very happy. I was spoiled for his death and yet it was devastating. I have several Issues with the books and dunno if I'm going to either write or read fic extensively, but this? Was perfectly precisely what I needed.

Also, I'm Chilla and I am charmed to meet you too. <3

Oh god, I LOVED Cinna. He was the most badass. I really wished we'd seen more of Annie and Finnick/Annie, but I guess that's the limitations of first person perspective. I somehow wasn't spoiled for anything; I'm not sure how that happened. I have Issues with the books too, and I probably won't really delve into the fandom either (I'm a fan of everything but I only just got back into fandom in general and I'm still not that active in it) - they're a blast to read, but not my favorite series ever or anything. But I read the whole series in four days, so it kind of took over my brain. When I first left that comment to Ruth - that the book was in my bag - I hadn't actually started them yet. I'm a lit major, so I'm perpetually reading something, but this was a nice cool-down. If you have any other series suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Me too, me too! Well, for certain values of "back into" - I doubt I shall commit much public ficcing, apart from comment-a-thons. Also, I so did not miss the wank and am very carefully side-stepping it. (Only just watched BtVS, and, while I want some fic and some meta, I so do not want the apparent endless vitriol.)

The best book I've read recently was Feed by Mira Grant - which, okay, about zombies, sure, but it has the best narrator ever. It's the first of a trilogy, but the following books aren't out yet. Still, it works as a standalone and excels at some things I felt Hunger Games botched. (Like, say, characterisation.) I can't rec a series offhand, but I'll holler if I remember something.

Yeah, ditto - these ficathons is how Ruth is snaring me into fandom. I'll read stuff, and I've always watched, you know, fandomy shows and read fandomy books, but I tend to like restricting my fandom to my terms, I guess. I'm a fandom introvert. (I grew up on BtVS, but I'm only just starting Doctor Who, which is what Ruth was not-so-subtly complaining about above.)

I will have to check those out! Yes, the Hunger Games series was pretty much full of stock characters with pretty much singular characteristic personalities. But I think mostly I missed having a quick, readable series to get lost in. Collins' prose was nothing remarkable either, but still fun. But yes, will look up your rec. I LOVE me some zombies and good characterization. Thank you!
