The Truth Will Out.
By Ros Sawyer.
Mary/Lavinia & Robert/Jane, hinted Cora/Sarah.

Lavinia had come to Mary’s side when she called, gently taking her hand, feeling the girl’s trembles and gently squeezing her hand. She knew at least one was likely to panic or be angry and yet, she didn’t mind facing it. She was going to be there for Mary, no matter what happened.

She was thankful when Robert spoke first. She had a feeling that his, not so discreet, affair with Jane had affected him. His words had been quietly spoken and cautious, thoughtful to say the least.

“Well… I can’t say I’m impressed… however… if she makes you happy I can’t exactly forbid it, I’ve already lost one daughter, I won’t lose another.”

Mary had shivered a little and allowed Lavinia to pull her closer. She had smiled as she leant into Lavinia slightly. She had waited nervously for her mother’s response. She had a feeling she knew what was coming, if her father was calm it was generally her mother who reacted badly.

She had watched Cora rise, silently praying that she would be careful and not hurt herself even if she was likely to hurt her own daughter. As it was Cora spoke gently, turning to look at her daughter before she took a drink of the wine she’d poured herself.

“Does she make you happy?”

“Yes. She does.”

“Then I can’t be angry with you can I?”

“Mother?”

“I wouldn’t deny you happiness Mary.”

“Thank you.”

Cora had said nothing, finishing her wine and excusing herself.

Lavinia had smiled slightly, thanking Robert again before leading Mary from the room, speaking softly.

“You know, we really should thank O’Brien.”
