where there's smoke there's fire (Firefly; Kaylee/Simon, Zoe & Ensemble, PG-13ish)

Just stumbled upon this awesome comment-a-thon. Late to the party, but I hope you like it :)

It's still kinda funny to Kaylee sometimes, the way Simon is. Still a prim and proper Core doctor, and Kaylee suspects that's not going to change much, no matter how much time he spends on the fringes.

For instance, even though everyone knows about the two of them, Simon still blushes to the tips of his cute little ears when Mal makes a comment about never going in the engine room without knocking, or when Jayne...is Jayne, or when Inara passes Kaylee her special incense with a wink. "To set a certain mood, little sister," Inara says, and without fail, Simon's ears turn pink when Kaylee tells him about it later.

Kaylee worries quietly about it. River just rolls her eyes at her over the dinner table, bratty teenager and queen of the 'verse all in one.

One night, Kaylee is doing her before-bed check up on Serenity when she finds Zoe at the cockpit.

"Just checkin' on everything. G'night, Zoe," she says. She ain't two steps to the door before Zoe clears her throat.

"You know, when Wash and I first got together, I didn't like the idea of anyone else knowin'. Rightly none of their business, I thought. But Wash, he woulda told the whole 'verse if he had the chance. And I love--loved him, so I'd give him little things--I'd make him wife soup.Or I'd smile at him real slow-like when he bought our drinks. I wasn't shoutin' anything, but he heard. You get me?"

It's the most Zoe's said since--well, since. Kaylee can only nod.

"Good. You get on to bed now. And go easy on your doctor. I got me a feelin' that even if he weren't born & bred Core proper, he'd still be Simon."

"Y-yes, ma'am--Zoe. G'night."

And when Kaylee gets to her bunk, Simon is stretched out in her bed, waiting. His smile lights slow, burns hot, and when she lays down next to him, he whispers, "Kaylee, Kaylee, Kaylee," and blushes, not just to the tips of his ears, but all down his neck and chest, and--

"Oh," Kaylee says, realizing. "Oh, Simon--"

The next morning, Simon is asleep next to her, and Kaylee knows now that even though Simon is a prim and proper Core doctor, now he's *her* prim and proper Core doctor. The thought makes something in Kaylee warm up nice and slow, like Serenity's engines after a long time in dry dock. It's no wonder Simon don't speak much about it. If this is what his blushes feel like from the inside, well, if the night before was any indication, Kaylee would have trouble gettin' any words out at all.
