The Shiny Happy Comment Ficathon!

Winter is coming; daylight is fleeting; for the students among us, end-of-semester hell is just about to rear its ugly head. What better way to combat such woes than with a super-cheerful comment ficathon?

Ergo:

The Rules Are Thus:

1. Cheerful prompts! I feel like there's not much regulation here in terms of pairings: almost every ship or pair of characters is capable of a fluffy/happy/silly moment, and if they're not in canon, then why can't they be in fic? However, any prompt involving, say, lyrics from Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie" is probably not appropriate in terms of tone. Unless it's the "guess that's why they call it WINDOW PANE" line, which will never stop being hilarious.

2. Prompt format should go thus:

Fandom -- Pairing or characters -- prompt

3. For the fic you've written, please put the following in your comment's subject line: 'Fandom -- pairing -- title.'

4. Be nice!

5. Spread the fun, if you are so inclined!

6. Go forth and have a merry happy good time. :)

the hunger games - finnick/annie - so come again to the deep blue sea

[identity profile] fragmentedsky.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Victor’s Village is on the water.

Probably, in the past, this has been considered an ideal spot. It wraps around a bay so blue that the color melts into the sky when the sun is at its highest point. The fishermen don’t come here, not because there aren’t fish but because there’s a ring of large rocks at the bay’s entrance, making the area private, perfect. Annie can remember a time when she would have given anything to live here, even in a little cardboard box, just to be able to live on these shores, to swim every day until she couldn’t and then fall into the white-warm sand and let the small waves bury her when high tide came in.

She even remembers one morning, years ago, absently, thinking the chance to live there might even be worth getting chosen for the Hunger Games. She quashed the thought immediately, but she can’t help wondering if it’s why the little slip of paper with her name on it was pulled out.

In the fourteen hours she spent in the water at the Hunger Games, in the dark water under the dark sky as she was surrounded by the gasps and gurgles and bloated corpses of her fellow players, she could think of nothing but that moment. That throwaway thought that had doomed her to die this way. There had only been five players left but she couldn’t keep count of the cannon shots, and when they pulled her up into the hovercraft she thought it was because she’d drowned and just not noticed.

Now she goes down to the bay every day. She measures the distance with her feet from her door to the water but she never goes in, never lets it touch her. She knows, someday, high tide will rise higher and swallow her, leave her to tread water until her muscles melt off her bones.

Today she’s up early. She measures. Eighty-one, eighty-two...

There’s something in the water.

A golden head rises out of the water, bright green eyes fixed on her. She recognizes him, of course; everyone recognizes Finnick Odair. He gives her an odd sort of smile, and she recognizes that too - she couldn’t tell you what it means, but it belongs to those who know what it’s like to be in the arena, and no one else.

“You never swim anymore.”

She takes a moment to sort out what he’s saying. She had been trying to count the waves, to see if they might chase him up the beach. The three steps he’s taken out of the water are still deep in the sand, though, so she must be safe. For now. For this moment, which once you’ve been in the arena is all you can really ask for. “I never swim,” she says.

“You used to, didn’t you?”

“How would you know?” She asks irritably. This intimacy they share is uncomfortable in its perpetual reminder. She wishes he would go away. She wants to make him say it - because it’s the reason you won.

But he doesn’t even hesitate, and that isn’t what he says. “Because you used to sneak out to learn to swim when you were a kid. I was always afraid to, but watching you swimming behind the boats at night was what made me want to learn.”

She hesitates. “I forgot. I forgot how.”

He shakes his dripping hair a bit, and water goes everywhere. For the first time in ages, she doesn’t leap away from it like acid. Drops land on her cheeks, cool and open, and she remembers what it feels like to rise up from deep water, toward the light, the pressure dropping as the whole world under the waves gets bigger and bigger.

“I can teach you,” he says.

Hhh. I knew I liked you, and it's not even cause Ruth says you're the best ever.

This is perfect. I could honestly feel the water, the joy of water in the last paragraph. (Next-to-last? "toward the light", anyway, which, yesss.) I love that she was Finnick's hero even before the Games, I love her unreasonable amplified guilt. I love that she recoils from water (like Johanna!) but also yearns for it. I love that her life in Victor's Village is basically a summary of the life of Victors - you got what you wanted and now you can't stand it. I love the ray of hope that is Finnick (but also the fact she may have been his ray of hope before this). I lovelovelove the idea that fishermen's kids aren't allowed to know to swim but Annie does it anyway.

Thank you for writing me this, I'll be rereading it forever.

Aw, thank you! Hey, I appreciate you giving me the excuse. It needs editing like whoa, I wrote it when I was bored in class, but I'm glad you like it. I just finished all three books and I needed some closure or just some more stuff with characters I did not get enough of (Finnick was like my favorite, I loved him to pieces, and I adored Johanna; I'm just glad one of them survived.)

Anyway, it's nice to meet you. I'm Abby.

Cinna was my favourite, but Finnick's the immediate runner up. Along with Annie. Finnick/Annie as a unit. Makes me so very happy. I was spoiled for his death and yet it was devastating. I have several Issues with the books and dunno if I'm going to either write or read fic extensively, but this? Was perfectly precisely what I needed.

Also, I'm Chilla and I am charmed to meet you too. <3

Oh god, I LOVED Cinna. He was the most badass. I really wished we'd seen more of Annie and Finnick/Annie, but I guess that's the limitations of first person perspective. I somehow wasn't spoiled for anything; I'm not sure how that happened. I have Issues with the books too, and I probably won't really delve into the fandom either (I'm a fan of everything but I only just got back into fandom in general and I'm still not that active in it) - they're a blast to read, but not my favorite series ever or anything. But I read the whole series in four days, so it kind of took over my brain. When I first left that comment to Ruth - that the book was in my bag - I hadn't actually started them yet. I'm a lit major, so I'm perpetually reading something, but this was a nice cool-down. If you have any other series suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Me too, me too! Well, for certain values of "back into" - I doubt I shall commit much public ficcing, apart from comment-a-thons. Also, I so did not miss the wank and am very carefully side-stepping it. (Only just watched BtVS, and, while I want some fic and some meta, I so do not want the apparent endless vitriol.)

The best book I've read recently was Feed by Mira Grant - which, okay, about zombies, sure, but it has the best narrator ever. It's the first of a trilogy, but the following books aren't out yet. Still, it works as a standalone and excels at some things I felt Hunger Games botched. (Like, say, characterisation.) I can't rec a series offhand, but I'll holler if I remember something.

[identity profile] fragmentedsky.livejournal.com 2010-11-27 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ditto - these ficathons is how Ruth is snaring me into fandom. I'll read stuff, and I've always watched, you know, fandomy shows and read fandomy books, but I tend to like restricting my fandom to my terms, I guess. I'm a fandom introvert. (I grew up on BtVS, but I'm only just starting Doctor Who, which is what Ruth was not-so-subtly complaining about above.)

I will have to check those out! Yes, the Hunger Games series was pretty much full of stock characters with pretty much singular characteristic personalities. But I think mostly I missed having a quick, readable series to get lost in. Collins' prose was nothing remarkable either, but still fun. But yes, will look up your rec. I LOVE me some zombies and good characterization. Thank you!
